Do you love your name?

When i was growing up, i hated my name because i was the only child in my family without an english name, i made up names for myself and yearned for one, my dad felt pity on me after much threateningbegging from me that he gave me one when i was 7, i was not impressed[
there were 3 girls i already knew with the same name but it was the best catholic name he could find, i shortened it, it suits me and i love it,used it from that day

As for my traditional name, it happens to be one of the most beautiful unusual names in my country and my father couldn't have done better, and now that i live in europe it is exotic, i thanked my dad last time i saw him,so, if you had to choose your own name, what would you have named yourself?if you are happy with the one you have,fine..

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'm Lindsay. Ok for a little girl but for someone fast approaching 40?? Too many connotations on the spelling as well.

Ilovemyscrumples · 18/02/2011 20:49

I have always thought my name is OK. I have been called Mel as a nn since I was a teenager. If I am ever introduced to someone new as Mel they always presume that it is short for Melanie but its actually Melissa. I definately prefer Melissa to Melanie, although half my friends now call me Melanie as a nn (probably just to annoy me)!
I think Melissa became quite popular a few years after I was born but I don't know that many others, except my step-mum - a complete coincedence!

JemimaMop · 18/02/2011 20:30

I didn't like my name (Delyth) when I was growing up, but I think it suits me as an adult.

Odelay · 18/02/2011 20:11

Ive Bern through peaks and troughs with mine. When I was little in wales I was the only one I knew and a bit ostracised because it was 'posh'. I grew to quite like it in my teens but then it had a popullarity explosion and now I hear all sorts yelling it in tesco

Odelay · 18/02/2011 20:08

SoH is it the same name as that film a fish called?

That is an excellent name, I love it

Show, now I've got that song going through my head. At least it is a much cooler song than the Gilbert O'Sullivan song my sister was named after Grin

tomatoesontoast · 18/02/2011 19:25

cool! I would pronounce it with a 'ch' as in cherry, so

chengeh-taaee

am I close?

where's it from? I would guess maybe somewhere in Africa? (probably completely wrong - south east asia?)

BlessedAssurance · 18/02/2011 14:55

i promise you ,there are not many people with that name here in Europe and i love it, family call me Chenge, sounds more lovely when DH says it with his accent. :o

Blessed, I'm intrigued - any chance you could divulge what name your father gave you?

I hated my name when I was growing up (welsh name) but since living in england i've grown to like it and it's nice being a bit different

BlessedAssurance · 18/02/2011 12:58

so far so good, haven't heard a bad name at all,
really liked Nicola too,

Violet not keen and i think Harriet is better,

Cassandra love love, especially Cassie as a nn.

Hatterbox · 18/02/2011 11:49

Norman - thank you. I just see Violet as being more 'exotic' than Harriet, but I suppose on the positive side, my name has better nicknames.

Oh and I really like Heather and Hilary. I know two Heathers, neither like their name either, but I don't get why. Confused

ShowOfHands · 18/02/2011 11:15

*I'm

ShowOfHands · 18/02/2011 11:14

I named after a Beach Boys song. There's little to love tbh. Never met another one although there is a MNer with the same name.

berryshake · 18/02/2011 11:11

I'm a Cassie (Cassandra only used for official documents, etc.) and I love my name. It's quite rare to meet another one, but most people have heard of it and it's easy to pronounce.

Oh no, Hatterbox, Harriet is definitely better than Violet.

My twin sister is a Hilary, which I don't like any better than my own name.

I would liked to have been an Isabel, but I think the name which would have suited me most would be Jane.

Pinner35 · 18/02/2011 10:47

I'm love my name as there's not many of us around (Vanessa). My DD's are called Lucy and Sophie which I absolutely adore.

BarbieLovesKen · 18/02/2011 10:45

growing I adore Kate. This ones a Kate if baby is a girl...

Hatterbox · 18/02/2011 10:45

I've always been happy as a Harriet, unless it gets shortened to Harry, which I don't like. (To clarify, I like Harry as a name for a boy, I don't like it as a nn for myself). The only nns I allow are Hattie and Hettie.

However, although I'm a happy Harriet, my twin sister is called Violet and I think she got the better name.

BigusBumus · 18/02/2011 10:42

I'm Anna which I think is quite classic and class-less. I like it.

Sarsaparilllla · 18/02/2011 10:36

I do like my name, it's not common but it's not unusual enough to stand out too much, it's Shelly-Ann tho I'm usually just Shelly

I 've noticed there's not a lot of love for hyphonated names on here :o but it was only because I'm named after my aunty and my parents wanted some kind of distinction, I like it anyway

growing3rdbump · 18/02/2011 10:32

My name's Kate (Katherine) and I do love it.
I have used Katherine as middle name for my DD. She has an unusual first name and more traditional middle name.
