What do these girls names say to you?

So, DH and I just found out that we are having a girl after two boys. I'm in total shock as I though this was another boy. At least it means I can cross out half the huge name list. :)

So I'm wondering what these names say to you.

Elliot
Darcy
Scarlett
Madison
Phoebe
Aurora
Matilda
Elise
Xanthe
Trinity

Some are Dh's choice, some are mine. I would also like to know of anything that is massively popular. We live quite rurally so don't know loads of children.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Have a Phoebe and adore the name Tabitha (never thought of it before!) Phoebe is quite well used, I'd consider Phoebe Tabitha or Tabitha Phoebe. I also love Xanthe and it's far more unusual.

All awful except Matilda, which is fab.

Galdem · 20/02/2011 09:40

Elliot - boy

Darcy, Scarlett, Madison, Trinity - footballer's kid

Phoebe, Matilda - nice names but cutesy, possibly with sisters called Holly, Tilly, Milly or Evie

Xanthe - posh, try hard

Elliot - boy
Darcy - posh boy in Jane Austen novel
Scarlett - harlet
Madison - chav
Phoebe - spaniel
Aurora - Disney princess
Matilda - lovely name
Elise - Beethoven, but lovely name
Xanthe - posh girl from Brat Camp
Trinity - Mother of Rhinos

Hatterbox · 18/02/2011 23:24

Probably more for a boy, although I do think of 'Scrubs' witht he female doctor who is called Eliot.

Ah yes, but she does say in one of the earlier episodes, as her parents had all boys before her, they just assumed they were having another boy and picked the name Eliot.

When she ended up being a girl, they stuck with the name, so it is still hinting at the fact it is a boy's name.

FjorgynAndHotWater · 18/02/2011 22:52

Not that we should be encouraging others horton as Tabitha is still rare enougn to be doubly fantastic Grin

Bizarrely the only other Tabitha I actually know in real life is the DD of my SIL's SIL. So my nephew has two girl cousins, both called Tabitha Shock (obv mine came first...)

Horton · 18/02/2011 22:45

Me too, Fjorgyn. Mine is fearsome. I don't see it as a little girly name at all. Little girly names to me are things like Poppy, Mia, Evie, Kitty, Ellie.

FjorgynAndHotWater · 18/02/2011 22:34

psammead I can imagine my Tabitha as a world dictator anything she puts her mind to

threefeethighandrising · 18/02/2011 22:29

I like Xanthe, Matilda and Phoebe best. I like Scarlett but I think it's becoming a bit too popular.

How about Elodie?

Not that I am biased (Wink) but Tabitha is a magnificent name Smile Some people say it's too much of a cat name but really, how many dogs are called Ben, Sam etc and it doesn't put folks off those names...

Tillyscoutsmum · 18/02/2011 22:20

Elliot - A boy's name

Darcy - DN's name. Like it

Scarlett - DSD's name. Like it

Madison - trendy/American

Phoebe - Friends (still Blush I do like it though, just can't get past the association)

Aurora - Sleeping Beauty

Matilda - dd's name. Love it

Elise - sort of unfinished ?

Xanthe - not keen

Trinity - trendy

Patchworkpumpkin · 18/02/2011 22:15

I actually like Elliot for a girl - I think it has a feminine feel to it.

Phoebe, Scarlett and Matilda are nice but all quite popular.

I like Aurora too.

bambiandthumper · 18/02/2011 20:52

Elliot - Dire.
Darcy - Not as bad as Elliot, but very, 'i'm going to try and think of a unique name'
Scarlett - Pretty, and 'Letty' is very sweet
Madison - I would assume you were American, or had connections, if this doesn't bother you the name is fine, and 'Maddy' is also sweet.
Phoebe - Very popular
Aurora - This is my 3 year old's type of name :o
Matilda - Love
Elise - Would always associate it with someone quite weak, or a push over, not sure why though. Much prefer Eliza or Eloise.
Xanthe - Fine, quite blah
Trinity - Awful, and horrible nicknames, 'Nity' anyone?

BachAtTheMoon · 18/02/2011 20:24

Tabitha!!! Was my choice for DC2 who turned out a boy!

Wigeon · 18/02/2011 20:20

Am doing this without looking at what others have said!

Elliot - boy's name

Darcy - ballerina. Or American. (neither a bad thing in themselves!)

Scarlett - prostitute. Sorry. And what if they want to be an accountant or civil servant or Head of the Bank of England?

Madison - American.

Phoebe - nice

Aurora - northern lights. DH sounds like "a roarer" (ie someone who roars).

Matilda - nice.

Elise - nice

Xanthe - not sure how to pronounce it.

Trinity - huh? Catholic.

Deciduousblonde · 18/02/2011 19:34

Elliot - Probably more for a boy, although I do think of 'Scrubs' witht he female doctor who is called Eliot

Darcy - Prefer it spelled Darcey..I know of a boy called Darcy

Scarlett - Have always loved this name Smile

Madison - A bit overused, loved it in 'Splash' but now appears to be a bit 'chavvy'

Phoebe - Love it, and love 'Friends' too!

Aurora - Great! So long as she can pronounce her 'r's

Matilda - A very special little girl Grin

Elise - Nice, quite classy

Xanthe - Like it, so long as she doesn't mind spelling it all her life.

Trinity - Not keen on this at all, sorry!

NadiaWadia · 18/02/2011 19:31

Elise and Xanthe are the nicest.
Elliot is definitely a boy's name, and Darcy could be one.

Greenwing · 18/02/2011 19:27

Elliot - No - Boy's name.
Darcy - No - Surname. Pride and Prejudice!
Scarlett -umm? Will date. 'Scar' not pretty.
Madison - American... Square Gardens.
Phoebe - Pretty
Aurora - So long as she can pronounce her 'r's
Matilda - Like it
Elise - Nice, quite classy
Xanthe - Like it, so long as she doesn't mind spelling it all her life.
Trinity - No. Holy Trinity? Are you religious? Only one I've known was an American boy.

Best are Elise, Matilda, Phoebe and Xanthe
IMO.
