I love it. Dh doesnt and it is not helped by the fact that in Scotland it means non educated delinquent...and I think they had made a film called NEDs recently.

What do you think?

Would give him the full name Edward on birth certificate.

I hadn't heard the Scottish thing but it does conjure up a village idiot type. Could you really be so in love with a name as to risk all these associations people are pointing out? I'd give it a wide berth. Edward is a good compromise.

Call him Edward for goodness sake. IMO it's always better to have a 'proper' first name. His nickname could be Ned. And then when he wants to go to uni in Scotland or something, he can become Eddie!

Its ok, I don't love it. It was a name on my sisters SL when pregnant, she never went for it in the end, think too many people put her off it.

meditrina. I can assure you that the meaning of "Ned" in Scotland has been the same for many, many years and won't be changing anytime soon. Can't see anyone saying "Watch out for that bit of town, there are loads of individuals who are NEET hanging around"! Grin

Can't offer an opinion on Ned because, like all the other scottish people here, to me it is just a word, not a name.

Could choose an Edward type name so if your DS moves to Scotland he'd have options?

I am Scottish and up here it's just unthinkable. Might as well call him 'junkie scum', which is what it boils down to here I'm afraid.

Sorry, but you have to be thorough when choosing!! My rule is explore every avenue!!
You never know where your child is going to end up in life - he might get a big job in Glasgow. In which case, Ned would be very very wrong!!

Love Eddie though.

I see it as nn for Edward, Edwin or Edmond, and wouldn't think of a NED connexion (which may prove transitory anyhow, as NEET is a more prevalent acronym).

sounds too horsey for me I'm afraid but you could use it as a shortened version of Edward. Ned sounds like a victorian servant out of Katherine Cookson to me.

Edward is a brilliant name, with some great NN..Why of why then would you pick the one that stands for 'Non-Educated [sic] Delinquent'Confused So it's a big fat no for me.

You can hardly blame people north of the border for the negative connotations...it's like suggesting the name 'Scallie'...I'm sure a number of people in the Liverpool area would be advising a big fat NO too.

A very definite no from me. I am in Scotland where naming your child Ned would the equivalent of calling him 'chav' or 'thug',but it also has an ugly sound,and is best reserved for carthorses imho.

I love Ned as a NN for Benedict, and am mightily pissed off by the negative connotations north of the border.

Ed and Ted are both nice, but IMO not as nice as Ned.

I wanted Ned for my ds, but as my grandad Edward died on the day he was born we used that as a middle name and went with our other choice.

The only jibe we got was oooo like Ned Flanders from the Simpsons

I love Ned but prefer Edmund as the formal name.

I find Edward a bit blah compared to Edmund.
