What do you think of Antigone?

I love the name Tiggy, but would like to christen daughter with a 'proper' full name rather than an obvious nickname. Are there any alternatives to Antigone, as although a strong and remarkabke character in Sophocles' story she was the product of an incestuous relationship and met a nasty death! Does the origin of a name matter?

I always have to say 'anti gone' in my head several times before I remember how it's pronounced. It doesn't look like a name really, more like a warning.

JaneS · 16/02/2011 14:02

She'll get called Aunty Gonie. Tabitha is lovely though, like that suggestion. I knew a Teresa who was Tiggy, too - but probably because we were 5 and she couldn't say it!

Please don;t condemn her to a life of "No, it's pronounced Anti-gone-ey. Yes, my mother was and Oxford Don, actulally, how did you guess? Oh, have you met my brother and sister, Caractacus and Boudicca?"

She's a feminist icon, isn't she? But it's quite a dark tale. I do like the sound of the word, though.

Tiggy is usually short for Elizabeth. Very old, traditional nickname. True story!

Pootles2010 · 16/02/2011 13:53

I take your point, but do most ignorant people like me know that?

GrimmaTheNome · 16/02/2011 13:51

Oh no, apart from the awful story and 'anti-gone' pronunciation, she might get called TiggyWinkle

HtheH · 16/02/2011 13:50

It's not that awful is it? She was really a tragic hero who fought for what she truly believed in. Admirable qualities really? Or am i trying to convince myself?

Sorry that is awful full name. It just makes me want to crack awful joke of 'where's she gone?' Very childish of me I know.

Says something about me that I want to crack childish jokes rather than knowing anything about Sophocles though so you may want to ignore me.

GooseyLoosey · 16/02/2011 13:46

No from me too. How about Tabitha?

petitdonkey · 16/02/2011 13:43

have a look here

WhensBedtime · 16/02/2011 13:41

The story of Antigone is so awful that it would really put me off the name.

PurveyorOfWoo · 16/02/2011 13:40

Antigone bit difficult to spell, pronounce and not a nice story

How about Agatha nn Taggy? (or you could use Tiggy at a push)
