Advice on boys and girls names. Is the boy name plain silly?

Hello,

Baby due any day now.

We think we will go for Aoife for a girl, but I can't help thinking Vivienne is cool (but not sure as it has Angelina associations now, I was thinking more of Vivien Leigh).

Always, always have trouble with boys names. Quite like:

Hugh
Bran
maybe Lachlan,

and here is the odd one - Severin. Am I just too hormonal?!! Would it be one to regret?

Any help/other suggestions appreciated.

I love Vivienne, very very nice name. Am loving Juliet too.

Bran is utterly awful, sorry lol.

Love Lachlan.

whydobirdssuddenlyappear · 14/02/2011 21:47

I like Bran. As in the Welsh name meaning 'crow'?
Also like Lachlan. I know a lovely little Lachlan.
Severin would be destined to be a goth...

SilkStalkings · 14/02/2011 21:45

Would Brand be a bit more masculine perhaps?

Namingdilemmasagain · 14/02/2011 20:52

Yes I'm a bit worried about the ignorance over the name Bran and realise it could be open to teasing. It is a real name though, those 'American' names are just made up, surely?

Thanks for your suggestions though everyone. Still don't think dp and me are much further on. I know this one will be nameless for a few weeks again...well if it's a boy anyway.

Severin make me think of Severine the prostitute in the movie Belle Du Jour.
Bran is daft, although probably less so in America with all the Bricks, Clays and Chads.

Bunbaker · 14/02/2011 18:35

Bran - you have got to be joking! Bran flakes, All Bran, Rice Bran, Oat Bran. The teasing will be relentless (and regular LOL), and to a child it will be horrible.

Not keen on Severin. It reminds me of Severus Snape and savarin (a cake similar to rum baba)

DesertOrchid · 14/02/2011 18:17

Severin just makes me think 'severing'...

Imps7 · 14/02/2011 13:09

I'm not keen on Bran, only because of the association with eating AllBran to keep you regular.

I really like Bram though - could that be a possibility?

Not keen on Hugh, really like Lachlan.

Severin - don't know why, but it sounds a bit agressive to me - maybe it's the "sever" part of it?

Good luck with the birth and hope you find the right name!

greenzebra · 14/02/2011 12:22

Bran = all bran, bran flakes etc etc i think might be open to bullying, but maybe thats just the area I come from.

Italiangreyhound · 14/02/2011 03:34

Louis - lovely, don't like Bran personally.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/02/2011 06:47

I know two Severin's. One is a Swiss boy the other a grown man with a French mum. I like it a lot.
Vivienne is a lovely name, Bran is diabollically awful. HTH.

nooka · 13/02/2011 06:36

Severin is much too like Severus Snape for me - not a good association! Blake Seven was Servalan (female, quite evil and very foxy with it) perhaps a good name for a slinky sort of cat?

Vivienne is lovely. Not so keen on any of your boys names. Louis isn't very unusual and Hugh is very preppy to me. Would Bran have an English (with a sharp 'a') or Welsh (with a long 'a'_) pronunciation?

scottishmummy · 12/02/2011 21:59

bran is ghastly

Amadeus - wanky middle class try too hard
Atticus - yes ok
Beckett- wanky try too hard
Claude - yes you have surname for it.
Elijah - v v popular
Hadley - gimp from spandau no nooooooooo
Joaquin like it
Roman love it
Reuben love it
Sebastian love it

MelinaM · 12/02/2011 21:52

Yep, just had a quick google! I'm rather liking it now, and Bran on it's own is growing on me I must saySmile

I love Dashiell! Hmm ...how about:

Amadeus
Atticus
Beckett
Claude
Elijah
Hadley
Joaquin
Roman
Reuben
Sebastian

scottishmummy · 12/02/2011 21:44

dashiell,as in monority report or author hammett.like it actually

Namingdilemmasagain · 12/02/2011 21:41

Melina thanks for taking the time to post those suggestions.

Wasn't Branwell a Bronte? I like Bran as it is though.

Yes, think Severin might be trying too hard...

Like Dashiell, but dp doesn't, same with Oisin, hester. In fact, I really like Oisin.

In spite of my suggestion of Severin, I would quite like a down-to-earth-but-different-name, if one exists!

pointydog · 12/02/2011 21:36

I like Louis.

And I like Vivienne actually. I really quite like it.

Nickname for Hugh - Shug

Namingdilemmasagain · 12/02/2011 21:35

What's shug/shuggie? And yes, Severin from the Velvet Underground song.

I do like Louis, but I think it may be a bit too 'normal'?! I try not to go for popular names. Is this still popular now?

No one liking Vivienne?

OP posts:
MelinaM · 12/02/2011 21:33

Vivienne is a lovely name, I think very few people will associate it with Ange & Brad, they certainly didn't pop into my head when I saw it! Love it, go with VivienneSmile

Hugh is a lovely name for a little chap, I like Bran, but it looks unfinished, do you have a longer version in mind? ...not a fan of Brandon! Lachlan is okay. Severin is a new one on me! ..I think I'd steer well clear of this oneWink

I'm thinking you like unusual name, so here we go:

Augustus
Balthazar
Barnabus
Bay
Branwell ..Hmm
Caspar
Cassius
Crispin
Dashiell
Humphrey
Ignatius
Inigo
Magnus
Orson
Phineus
Rafferty
Romulus
Stellan
Xavier

pointydog · 12/02/2011 21:31
