Emmeline or Emilia (shortened to Emmy)

I prefer Emmeline and DP prefers Emilia (think he has a crush on Emilia Fox!)

I don't mind that they might get confused with Emily and Amelia..... that's just one of those things.

For a boy we now both seem to agree on Ted (Edward on birth certificate).

Emmeline. Always nice to have a song named after you!

izzybiz · 08/02/2011 18:07

I've never really had any comments from men on my name TBH!
Obviously my dad liked it, unfortunately I'm not named after Emmeline Pankhurst but after the Hot Chocolate song Emma, Emmaline Blush Child of the 70's!

I have always had to explain its Emmaline not Emily, and I do get asked if its pronounced Emma-line or Emma-leen quite often too.

The one thing that I have always had is complements on what a beautiful and unusual name it is, I was always Emmie as a child (still am to my Nan!) and known as Em now by friends etc.

I love my name!

Emilia (ours is called Em or Millie)

tomatoesontoast · 08/02/2011 12:46

emmeline much nicer and less common

MrsGruffalo · 08/02/2011 12:45

Absolutely and most definitely Emmeline (pronounced Emma-leen)

nancythenaughtyfairy · 07/02/2011 22:17

Emmeline Smile

traceybath · 07/02/2011 22:16

Emmeline - a beautiful name.

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 07/02/2011 22:14

Another vote for Emmeline :)

BeeBox · 07/02/2011 21:35

Emmeline. Beautiful.

Emilia is just Amelia spelled weirdly to me.

LyraBelaqua · 07/02/2011 21:00

Emmeline is my fave it sounds quite grown up too so would be good when shes an adult.

Duhart · 07/02/2011 20:44

How would you pronounce Emmeline? I'd always assumed Emma-leen or Emma-lee-na at a stretch but I know one 10 year old who pronounces it Emma-lyne - less elegant IMO.

I love Emilia too, but would lean more towards Emmeline as less used.

I know an Amalia too (nn Mali), which is beautiful.

That should have said "react" !

Piffle , I agree that men don't seem to reacy as positively to the name Emmeline. I think, because it's unusual, and associated with a feminist, it might evoke negative reactions. Whilst I know that shouldn't bother me....it does...a little.

I have an Emmeline ( hubby hated so went for Emilia)
Shortened to Emmy
No issues about confusion and it's a sweet and unusual enough name
:)

My DD is Amelia - we thought of a number of different nicknames for her but once she was here it was Emmy that stuck. I now wish we had gone for Emelia!

simonedeboudoir · 07/02/2011 20:18

sorry Emmeline

simonedeboudoir · 07/02/2011 20:17

I will expand. To me, Emmeine sounds quite cool while Emilia sounds more girly and twee. And it's a bit more of a mouthful.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2011 20:13

Emmeline here. I don't like the 'meal' in the middle of Emilia, and Emmeline is more likely to be shortened to Emmy, whereas Emilia would more likely be Millie.

Migraine85 · 07/02/2011 20:08

Emmeline - although Emilia is nice too

AnnieDelores · 07/02/2011 20:06

Do you think men and women might respond differently to Emmeline? Izzybiz , what's your experience?

chickchickchicken · 07/02/2011 20:02

carciofi · 07/02/2011 20:01

Emmeline is pretty but I prefer Emilia, as that is my DD's name. :)
