Jude versus Luca

I love both the names Jude and Luca for a boy and can't choose between the two. I'm not sure if they are both going to end up being too popular and is Luca a bit pretentious unless you have Italian links?? All feedback gratefully received thanks :-)

Both great names, I liked Jude but already have two J names so wanted something different. We didn't really think about names until a few hours before ds was born then both just rather randomly came up with Luca.

I was also worried that it would be odd as we are absolutely not Italian in anyway, however a paramedic ended up being involved in his delivery - his name was Lucas so we kind of felt it was fated.

It did slightly divide opinion, people seem to really like it or quite dislike it, but we love it and he so is his name.

Good luck!

If people are thinking of Luca but worried about Italian hertiage, what about...

Luke
Lucian
Laurence (Laurie)
(Lucas - but v trendy at the mo)

It's all helpful thanks Smile Jude is way more popular so far but I think whichever I go far (more likely Jude ) they are both great names Grin

freya, spooky, both names in my shortlist too but then dh didn't want Jude as he seems to have a particular dislike to Jude Law!!
I am also just a tiny bit worried about using Luca and having no connections to Italy at all, have only been there once!! I feel a little bit 'false' if we use it. It's till lurking in my favourite list but think we will probably use something else.
That wasn't really a very helpful post was it!!

My gorgeous ds is Luca and contrary to popular belief it is not pretentious to name your dc a name from another country. Luca is much nicer than Jude imo.

midori1999 · 08/02/2011 16:50

My DS2, who's 10, is called Luca (I admit I would have also used it if he had been a girl) and I love, love, love it. I have never heard of another Luca personally and everyone comments on what a nice name it is.

I have no Italian links and am certainly not in any way pretentious. Smile

Jude! I have a gorgeous DS Jude and still feel so happy I got to use my number 1 name. DH wanted Max but let me have Jude after the birth, ha ha! Hoping it doesn't get too popular though...

HildegardVonBlingen · 08/02/2011 13:37

(I do not live in Italy!)

HildegardVonBlingen · 08/02/2011 13:37

Lots of little Lucas where I live. I'd choose Jude on that basis (but would have serious reservations about it, thanks to Jude the Obscure!)

My handsome little 7m old ds is Jude Alexander.Such a lovely name IMO.
Much nicer than Luca(if you don't have Italian links then Luke much nicer IMO)Smile

cumbria81 · 08/02/2011 13:30

Jude sounds very girly, Luca sounds too Itailan. So neither.

expectingno3 · 08/02/2011 13:16

Doh! Just the thread I kind of didn't want to happen upon. I too like the name Luca, but with no Italian links bar a love of pizza, pasta and the odd Italian holiday, am now also wondering if its suitable or not!

SameOldJollster · 08/02/2011 12:01

agree with violethill, prefer Jude, but if Joseph is a definite MN, then Luca works better.

fifi25 · 08/02/2011 11:50

Jude Smile

Glamour · 08/02/2011 09:57

jude!

BeeBox · 08/02/2011 09:43

Jude much nicer.

Fourleaf · 08/02/2011 09:10

Jude is better if you're not Italian IMO

freya2010 · 08/02/2011 08:50

Thanks AlfalfaMum - Jude seems to be winning here, I love Italy and all things Italian but maybe with an English surname Luca may sound a bit out of place...

I prefer Jude; I like Luca but do think it works best on little boys with some Italian heritage.
I think Jude Joseph goes together nicely too.

freya2010 · 07/02/2011 23:16

Thanks guys, I'm still split down the middle on this one - I'm worried whichever I choose I will have a hankering for the other one aargh!!

I prefer Jude.

Violethill · 07/02/2011 19:07

Luca Joseph sounds better than Jude Joseph.... but I far prefer Jude out of the two. I think Luca is a little odd if you're not Italian too

headfairy · 07/02/2011 17:41

I love Luca, but then I've got a ds who's Luca. We're from an Italian family though - but we've all been born here and don't speak much more than holiday Italian so to intents and purpose we're English.

freya2010 · 07/02/2011 17:40

Confused!!
