Having a last minute wobble about name for DD due later this month.

Thought we'd settled on Alexandra (did like Lexie as nn but have been educated against it by MN, so not so sure now!) but now considering Katharine with nn. Kitty? Or perhaps Kate?

Any thoughts?

I love Lexie, it's sooo gorgeous. So if that's your first choice, forget about what people on MN have been saying - sometimes I think the women on this forum can be even meaner than a child!!!

However I also love Kitty. So much so that if we have a girl, we'll both share the middle name Catherine and Kitty will be my "private" nickname for her.

LetThereBeRock · 04/02/2011 14:50

Katharine is ok,but Alexandra is much nicer imho.

As for nicknames,Kate is nice, but I hate Kitty. It makes me think of a stripper or burlesque dancer.

messylittlemonkey · 04/02/2011 11:04

DD 2 is Kitty. Just that, not short for owt. Had sooo many compliments on it.

mannicmummyhavinaiccy · 04/02/2011 08:57

I LOVE Kitty, was going to use it myself, but am worried it is getting VERY popular ATM, and Kathrine is going to go through the roof! But you should choose what you like, not what others tell you too! I let everyone tell me my names for DD1and DS and I changed DD name by deed poll, I was so unhappy with her name and still think my choosen name for ds would have suited!

Dreya · 04/02/2011 07:51

I like both but Alexandra is much nicer than Katherine in my opinion. I would personally go with your first choice. All the K/Catherines I know (and there are quite a few) just get called Cat if anything. Alexandra to me is the name of a strong beautiful woman. Kitty makes me think of that annoying Hello Kitty. Nickle we share the same name! :)

Umnitsa · 04/02/2011 00:42

Love both names - and they are DD's names! Well, the spelling is slightly different as she is Alexandra Katerina.

I was surprised about all the negativity about Lexie on MN but in any case only her American grandmother calls her that, whilst I have a myriad Russian nicknames for her.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 04/02/2011 00:29

I think Catherine is the best spelling ;)

Violethill · 03/02/2011 23:37

Agree that its a bit naff to try to ascertain nicknames before the child is born. Give the child a name and see what - if anything- evolves naturally. Not keen on kitty anyway- just makes me think of cats- though kate is lovely. Love alexandra, and Alex is fine as a nn but lexie is urghh!

muminthemiddle · 03/02/2011 23:16

I think if you like Alexandra then call her that. Who cares if a tiny bunch of random strangers dislike the name Lexie? It is uncommon so that is a plus!

EricNorthmansMistress · 03/02/2011 21:42

I think it's a bit naffola to decide what your DC's NN will be before they are born. I think you should choose a name you like and let a NN develop naturally if that's what happens. I'm Katherine and I happen to love my name, as it is. A couple of friends call me Kat but I have always been just Katherine. I do prefer Katherine to Alexandra.

jellybeans · 03/02/2011 19:55

I like both but if you use Lexie as a nn for Alexandra you have the whole initial confusion thing. Eg if you were Smith, is she L Smith or A Smith. So I would go for the other option.

youngjoly · 03/02/2011 14:23

Love it ... but then it is the name of my DD!

I suspect Kitty might well be a nn they grow out of as they get older and want something less cutsey... but I think Kate is beautiful for older girls.

My DD is the only Katherine / Kitty in her preschool, and in DD1s school, there is only 1 Katherine in a school of 300, so it has been a name quite out of vogue, but I seem to see it coming up on here more and more often these days...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/02/2011 13:10

Another yes vote for Kitty. I really like that name (along with Kate). Unfortunately my rule was no religious or family names allowed to be considered. I remembered about St. Katherine on her wheel and refused to consider it again. Fool I am.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 12:52

Lockets - i think you mmight be right! Grin
i think it's also partly because my name is Andrea, and it's just too close.

BarbieLovesKen · 03/02/2011 12:21

Im sorry but I hate Kitty. I just think "cat". Kate is absolutely gorgeous though Wink and also, if you are using Katherine (love it spelt with a "K", btw) I would go with an E, as others have mentioned.

katiepotatie · 03/02/2011 12:13

oh btw I love Alexandra too Smile

Kitty is lovely, and I like the use of Katherine with a K lol! It fits better with the nn Kitty then. Much nicer than Alexandra and Lexie IMO but if you love it, then go for it. Not everyone will like Kitty but its only you and your partner/hubby that count.

katiepotatie · 03/02/2011 12:11

Katharine is lovely, I'm biased though as it is my name and imo the best way of spelling it Wink Katharine Hepburn spelt it this way too. I get called Kate or Katie. Go for it Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 12:11

that wasn't complete, was it?

kitty/kate/katie are all good Katharine nicknames

not keen on Alexandra, personally, which is odd, cos I love Alexander for a boy Confused

RamblingRosa · 03/02/2011 12:11

I love Lexie and Kitty. Go with what you love.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 12:10

I prefer the spelling Katherine, but I think Katharine as you've spelt it has a certain finesse about it.

And Lexie is a good nickname.

It's funny. We're very deliberately not discussing names with people in real life so no to be influenced by opinion, or rather people's initial reaction before they inevitably say something nice which they don't mean! But I searched Lexie on here and was surprised to see the very negative comments and don't want to saddle my PFB with a name which is viewed in this way.

I realise however that I'm being daft- we'll go with what we feel is best.

Love Kitty!

Katherine is not my kind of name but I do prefer it to Alexandra (too masculine to my ears)

Good luck choosing.
