Betty Jane for a girl?

What does everyone think? Me and DH think we want to keep our names a secret from friends and family until after the birth so that no one can put us off beforehand. Sounds good but also means I don't have any second opinions.

We have chosen the name for a boy which I am v happy with.

We have also chosen Betty Jane for a girl, which DH loves and I do too, think it's really pretty but keep having occasional pangs of doubt.... will my daughter hate being called Betty Jane... will friends and family think wtf?

Would love to hear some opinions...what would you think if you got introduced to the baby Betty Jane?

Love Betty, not Betty Jane though.

mumofeach · 01/02/2011 20:02

If it were me I would go with Elizabeth Jane
At least hat way you have given her a classic name that she can shorten in many ways as she likes

NorthernGobshite · 01/02/2011 19:35

I like Betty, Betty Jane sounds a bit contrived. And BJ as initials.....? Shock

strawberrylion · 01/02/2011 19:34

Part of me likes it but I'm not keen on the initials! And not overly keen on the two name thing tbh, would it constantly be Betty Jane and not just Betty?? Smile

CharlieBoo · 01/02/2011 19:25

I like it a lot...

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/02/2011 19:20

Are you going to use both names?

If so, what TheSecondComing said - plus it sounds a bit 1950s cutsey, so not sure if you really want that for a grown woman?

Elisabeth/Elizabeth is lovely though, and then it's up to her if she wants to go with Betty

FranSanDisco · 01/02/2011 19:18

Shock - well spotted.

Imagine yourself yelling 'Betty Jane, Betty Jane come back here..' in the park, supermarket ect. Bit of a mouth full. I agree with Elizabeth as a firsts name. Easier and not so cutesy.

AvaBanana · 01/02/2011 19:12

Nice name. Prefer Betsy or Bess to Betty, but that is just my opinion.

lololizzy · 01/02/2011 19:11

i love it. Great combination. as Betty not Elizabeth. very pretty.

AllieW · 01/02/2011 19:10

Sorry to be the voice of dissent, but not overly keen.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/02/2011 19:01

It's very Mad Men isnt it! It's growing on me more and more. Might start calling DD (who is an elizabeth) Betty.See how that goes. Grin

EauRouge · 01/02/2011 18:59

I agree Elizabeth will give her more options when she's older.

argylesocks · 01/02/2011 18:58

on first glance i expected to hate it... but there's actually something nice about it. it's cute and sassy (in a good way). I'd go for it. and personally I don't buy into the whole, 'must have a proper first name' thing. who cares what their official name is if you want to name her betty, do it!

neither betty nor jane are favourites of mine but together they sound really nice.

FranSanDisco · 01/02/2011 18:58

I'd go with Elizabeth Jane as well. I don't like Betty but I do like Beth, Bette, Betsy, Libby, so Elizabeth would give lots of options for your dd.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/02/2011 18:55

Elizabeth Jane and call her Betty as a nickname would give your DD more choice as she gets older.

TBH I quite like it, but not sure how I would feel if I had to grow up with the name.
