If you heard a baby was called Benedict...

would you think 'Pope'?

I like Benedict and Ben as a nickname. Like Benjamin, but DH thought Benedict was a bit more unusual.

I'm Catholic, but don't really approve of the Pope! I'm thinking he's well into his '80's so probably won't be a problem for long, but it's putting me off a bit!

I wouldn't think 'Pope' either.

Think it's a really lovely name, although have to be honest/boring - I prefer Benjamin!

duchesse · 31/01/2011 19:06

ps: there's also Ben(n)et as a nn which I think is quite cool. Am kicking myself we used Bene which sounds like Benny.

duchesse · 31/01/2011 19:02

I have a 17yo Benedict (goes by Ben at school, as did the only other child one I ever met), but am hoping he reverts to Benedict when he's older and wiser. No-one says pope although many people have called him Dominic by mistake over his life. Also know a 4 yo Benedict who was named for the pope.

Firawla · 31/01/2011 18:53

i would think they like Ben but wanted something more uncommon than Benjamin

ValiumSandwichTime · 31/01/2011 18:02

no I wouldn't. I like Popes' names though.

MackerelOfFact · 31/01/2011 17:27

I know an adult Benedict, he's just Ben.

Other than that, I also think of eggs.

If you like Ned, DS's middle name is Nederick. Appreciate it might not be to everyone's tastes though, although it has a sentimental family connection for me.

belgo · 31/01/2011 17:14

I know a baby Benedict. Nice name. I did think Pope but that shouldn't stop you.

Love Eliza!

Not that keen on Benedict (have also heard Bendy dick before) and Ned and Ben are both quite common.

SameOldJollster · 31/01/2011 16:02

go Ned, go Ned! The only isshoo is north of the border where NED is not a good term. Don't know if that would put you off.

BTW my grandmother was Eliza, it's one of my fave girl's names.

Feegle · 31/01/2011 15:53

I love Eliza as well its my favorite girls name at the moment.

Feegle · 31/01/2011 15:46

I don't where you get the "Wet" from dubaipieeye it seems strong to me. I can imagine a Benedict having a strong handshake etc and being handsome Grin

noeyedear · 31/01/2011 15:45

Thanks everyone for the input! I'm quite looking forward to having a little Benedict now, just as much as a little Eliza (Don't care who likes that one- it was the only agreed name, so it's staying!) Wonder if you can just choose a nickname- May try Ned!

jaffacake79 · 31/01/2011 15:42

I love it and it's on our list for when we have a baby!

Feegle · 31/01/2011 15:41

I love it. I would agree with sparkle, cool classic, timeless. Ben is a great for short.

dubaipieeye · 31/01/2011 15:32

I'm surprised by all the positivity for this name..to me it's a bit (well, no, very) "wet"...sorry

ZZZenAgain · 31/01/2011 13:48

no, I wouldn't. I like the name.

sparkle12mar08 · 31/01/2011 13:46

I'm showing my age here but I know a little Benedict and my first thought was Dirk Benedict - 'Faceman' from the A-team!!

I love Benedict, cool, classic, timeless.

noeyedear · 31/01/2011 13:38

I like Ned as a nickname- would have thought that would be Edward/Edwin type name though. Some more Pope votes coming out - At least I'm not the only one!

AllieW · 31/01/2011 13:36

No, it's one of my favourite boys' names.

AvengingGerbil · 31/01/2011 12:37

Another vote for pope.

FelicityParpworth · 31/01/2011 12:32

No. I know a Benedict, nothing papal about him. I personally prefer Benjamin.

NoSoapInADirtyWar · 31/01/2011 12:32

Just from reading thread title and OP, my immediate thought was eggs!

systemsaddict · 31/01/2011 12:31

I am lapsed Catholic with various 'ishoos' relating to that ... so I would think Pope at the moment, which would put me off a bit; but then, I would also think Benedictines, and am generally a big fan of the (predominantly) sensible and humane Benedictine approach to life. I think that association would win out, for me.

Lizzylou · 31/01/2011 12:24

I would immediately think of my DS2, who is a Benny most of the time Smile

I love the name (obv) and if you met my DS2, you'd know that anyone calling him Bendy Dick would get very short shrift Grin
