Both DH and I love Cuthbert and liked it separately before telling each other - this is the only name that this has happened with.

DH is a fan of the Dark Tower series which I think is the reason that he likes the name.

I've just liked it since I can remember.

Cuthbert nn Bertie

The problem is EVERYONE and ANYONE that we've mentioned it to seems to really dislike it. Some have said that it would be cruel to name a child Cuthbert.

What do you all think - is it that bad?

I was thinking of The Beano and Dirty Bertie!!

Panzee · 31/01/2011 08:19

I laughed. Sorry. :o

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/01/2011 08:17

Seriously? It is a ghastly name, you may as well call him Brian and have done with it.

I like it.

EricNorthmansMistress · 30/01/2011 23:44

Cuthy Hmm dreadful. Cuthbert - public school, wet. Bertie - twee. Cully is weirdly good but not a natural nn for Cuthbert. Roland is slightly better but makes me think rat.

BarbieLovesKen · 30/01/2011 21:01

Oh please dont. It really is cruel. Terrible, terrible name.

ThisFeelsWeird · 30/01/2011 20:28

"Both DH and I love Cuthbert and liked it separately before telling each other - this is the only name that this has happened with."

Goodness, what a coincidence Wink

Clearly, it is daft. Makes me think of the firemen from Camberwick Green. Oi Cuthbert, where's Dibble?

Be fair to the boy, give him a fighting chance, give him a better name.

BelligerentGhoul · 30/01/2011 18:58

Cully is a v old insult iirc - like calling somebody an idiot, I think. It's certainly used as such in historical fiction anyway.

Ro is quite nice as a nn for Roland, I guess.

JojoMags · 30/01/2011 18:54

I'm surprised by how negative reactions are to Cuthbert. I quite like it, and like Bertie or Cully as a nn (btw I know of a Robert nn Bertie, to give you an alternative). I have a Wilfrid, though, which is a name of similar origins that seems to evoke similar reactions. My great uncle was a Cuthbert, known as Cuth and he hated it, and changed to his middle name, James, as soon as he was old enough. Bizarrely he named his own son Cuthbert and the son in turn changed to mn John, so perhaps it's not so easy to live with after all.

Don't like Roland (Roland Rat) much, but Roly and Rollo are OK. Roly difficult if fat - Roly Poly atc.

PuppyMonkey · 30/01/2011 18:37

Don't be ridiculous, it's a joke name.

tammytoby · 30/01/2011 18:28

I actually quite like Cuthbert and the fact that it isn't already used by thousands others.

Not keen on Bertie though.

minimammoth · 30/01/2011 18:27

The only Cuthbert, I know changed his name at the age of 10, he preferred Jack. It may sound cute on a toddler /preschool but older. NO.

lulamama · 30/01/2011 18:21

I LOVE Cuthbert - an excellent name.
Roland is good too - I particularly like Rollo for short...
Cuthbert will definitely end up being an actor.

AllieW · 30/01/2011 18:15

I think it's quite nice. I cam imagine a well-read, suave, handsome lad with a name like Cuthbert. He might be a bit of a thesp, too.

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2011 18:08

I don't like Bertie at all either.

wisteria12 · 30/01/2011 18:06

"I am" not "I'm am"

wisteria12 · 30/01/2011 18:04

I'm am the mystery MNetter with a Cuthbert, at your service. These reactions are pretty typical OP; the fact is it's just not a fashionable name. But I find people are less critical towards Bertie or Cuthy. Or in our case; Cully. It's always a matter of personal choice - DH and I loved it for the historical associations and for the Tintin character. My dad was a vicar and he used to read me the stories of the old saints when I was young.

FWIW I'm from the south east where there's no particular trend for old saint's names, but he gets on well enough.

LetThereBeRock · 30/01/2011 17:37

No,no and a thousand times no. It's hideous. It's a terrible name.

CuthbertThePlaymobilPoliceman · 30/01/2011 17:03

Cuthbert is a wondeful and strangely underused name. I think there should be more of them around!

ValiumSandwichTime · 30/01/2011 17:02

Cuthbert is very bad, awful, awful...

Roly, I quite like!

Chocolocolate · 30/01/2011 16:59

Oh dear, the opinions are not looking good for Cuthbert or Roland.

strawberrylion · 30/01/2011 16:56

hmmm I don't mind Bertie...think that's what Patsy Palmer just called her baby...really don't like Roland but prob because I know one AND Roland Rat!?

BelligerentGhoul · 30/01/2011 16:49

:)

Oops! I think Roland will always remind me of the boy in Grange Hill tbh and the silly way that the girl used to pronounce it.

Still doesn't stop me fancying Mr Dark Tower Roland though!

Chocolocolate · 30/01/2011 16:41

Well BelligerentGhoul you've just got Roland thrown into the mix.

DH loves it - I like it, but I think it will grow on me. My only issue - I'm concerned he would end up being called 'Rollie'?

What do people think to Roland?
