Love the name Rebecca but hate Becky.

cowboylover · 10/03/2011 22:43

I really like Melody but would shudder if anyone called her Mel so its off the list!

sunshineoutdoors · 09/03/2011 16:07

I think the name Poppy is beautiful, but suspect I would end up shortening it to Pops.... reminds me of the league of gentlemen

bigbluebump · 09/03/2011 11:37

William is lovely but dislike Will/Willy/Billy

loueytb3 · 09/03/2011 11:35

I know several Rebeccas who never have their names shortened. I think if you are firm to begin with then people will follow.

I love Gabrielle but can't stand Gabby.

pinkthechaffinch · 09/03/2011 11:33

I like Barbara- due for a resurgence methinks- but dislike Babs and Barb (shudder)

Quite like Bunty though

fifi25 · 09/03/2011 11:28

Ive got a Connie. I hate the name Constance but love Connie Smile Ive also got a Romilly who gets called Roms all the time.

MamaLazarou · 09/03/2011 11:27

Astrid

I agree that Benedict is lovely but Bens are ten a penny.

Tummytickler, I am Rebekah and have never been a Bex or a Becky in my life!

emmanumber3 · 09/03/2011 11:21

I have the opposite problem - my DS2 is called Tom and I can't stand the name Thomas for some reason. However, people will insist on calling him Thomas (mainly his teachers who should know better by now - he's 10). It drives me mad :-(

paddingtonbear1 · 19/02/2011 10:53

so I guess the answer to your question tummytickler is yes - the name doesn't always get shortened.

paddingtonbear1 · 19/02/2011 10:52

Several have mentioned my dd's name (Victoria). I'm not that keen on Vicky either, although don't mind Tori or Toria. Nobody has shortened her name yet as we don't - when she's older, I guess it will be up to her which she prefers.
My cousin is married to a Rebecca - everyone calls her Becks! But the Rebecca in dh's family never gets her name shortened.

tummytickler · 19/02/2011 10:46

Such a shame about Rebekah. It would be very high on our list but Becky/Bex really is horrible.
Do you think it is ever possible to keep to the full name.

MrsChemist · 19/02/2011 09:49

I love Vincent, but hate Vince or Vinnie, so it's a no-no.

SunSoakedStone · 19/02/2011 09:40

More the opposite problem: liked Danny, couldn't stand Daniel so we just went for Danny and bypassed it completely.

Old people still call him Daniel though..! Confused

Psammead · 09/02/2011 14:32

Abigail. Dislike Aby.

mannicmummyhavinaiccy · 09/02/2011 13:15

I have a Tabitha, and I only ever call her by full name, IL's insist on calling her Tabs, I get so angry! but she calls herself Tabby, and loves it. Considering calling DD2 Elizabeth, cant wait to see what they call her, not! and DS is Toby, they shorten it to Tobes?!? drives me mad Angry

AllieW · 02/02/2011 18:05

smother, I share your dislike of Josephine. However, Josie can also be used as nn for Josette which is much nicer in my view!

Agree also with your dislike of Jazz as a nn for Jasmine. Think I would try & insist on full name usage in that instance.

SilkStalkings · 02/02/2011 16:16

Like Tabitha but Tabs/Tab is a horrible nn that you just can't stop people using.

Christmasbelle · 02/02/2011 14:22

Love Scarlett but didn't go with it in end. We considered using Ettie as a nn.

smother · 02/02/2011 09:20

ooh and also:

Maggie - gorgeous! Margaret - not so nice.
Kate - wonderful! Katherine - yawn.
Tess - divine! Tessa - yuk.
And so on...

Also I love Jasmine but Jazz? That would really put me off!

smother · 02/02/2011 09:16

I'm also very fond of the name Rebecca and dislike Becky. Becs is a lovely nn though and I'm sure you could avoid Becky.

It's the other way round for some girls' names: I love some nicknames and not the fullnames. e.g.

Jess - Love. Jessica - dislike.
Josie - Love. Josephine - ok, but wouldn't love to use it.

McDreamy · 01/02/2011 08:17

My favourite girls name in Rebecca, I think it's beautiful, elegant and timeless but I really really don't like Becky so we have never used it. My SIL has just used it for her new DD and she is already being called Becky.

babybythesea · 01/02/2011 08:10

Really pleased it's not just me!

I love Natalie, but can't stand 'Nat'.
Daniel.
Rebecca.
