Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

But surely you just tell people not to, if they insist on calling you or your DCs by the wrong name?
wanderingsheep's little girl has the right idea: "I'm not Izzy, I'm Isabel!"
DS has one of the more traditional names already mentioned on here. I don't care for one of the shortened versions. Result: no-one calls him it!

muminthemiddle · 13/04/2011 22:56

I agree about James. I had an irrational dislike for Jamie and Jim/ Jimmy whilst pregnant.

pootros · 13/04/2011 22:51

matilda - tilly too common

exoticfruits · 13/04/2011 19:29

Edward, Daniel, Christopher, James, Matthew

No girls names spring to mind-I quite like shortened forms.

iberry · 13/04/2011 19:22

I like the name Jaxon but I think it would be shortened to Jack. I dont dislike Jack but I know so many little babies born lately with this name.

petitdonkey · 13/04/2011 16:02

I now think.

petitdonkey · 13/04/2011 16:02

acaseofyou - I discounted Imogen, which I love, because I disliked Immy. My friend had an Imogen a year later and I know think Immy is adorable!! (I cried with name envy Blush)!!

Also, I'm a Rebecca but it is rarely shortened and never Becky.

MelinaM · 13/04/2011 15:58

Charlotte, I abhor Char, Chaz, Lottie.

William, Billy, Bill, Willy, Liam ...yuk!

Henry is a lovely name, not too formal at all, definitely stick with itSmile

acaseofyou · 13/04/2011 15:30

Teach me not to read the whole thread - the Henry question has already been answered, I see :)

acaseofyou · 13/04/2011 15:28

Imogen has always been my favourite girl's name, but Immy is vile.

I also love Henry, but that doesn't seem to have a short version at all - is this a downside?

flyingspaghettimonster · 12/04/2011 19:29

Sebastian for me too as I hate Seb and Baz. I would shorten it to Bastian...

I once went round to a little girl down the street's house one day to call for her to come out and play... I asked her Mum 'Is Vicky in?' and she slammed the door in my face saying 'there is no-one of that name lioving here!' I was stood there, shocked, on the doorstep when she opened it again and said 'you may speak to Victoria if you wish!' um, o-kay... it was the girl herself who told me her name. Clearly Momma bear wasn't happy with the diminutive form!

burntsienna · 12/04/2011 14:14

Oh, and agree with whoever said Gabby etc for Gabrielle. Unfortunately most people pronounce it Gab-riel instead of Gay-briel, which is something I don't understand as the extension shouldn't affect how the first syllable is pronounced. Better just to spell it the masculine way, I think. There are other names used for both boys and girls without spelling variations, so why not.

burntsienna · 12/04/2011 14:01

I loathe Jamie, and often wonder why you rarely hear Jimmy or Jim these days for a young James. It is a traditional variation, after all.

HipHopopotomus · 12/04/2011 12:45

Love the name HENRY!

Chickens I've ALWAYS called by brother Christopher - most other folk call him Chris (I think he prefers it). I've never been a huge one for NN's

SingingSands · 28/03/2011 19:33

For this reason we decided against giving DS the name Andrew. Don't like Andy, and it's pretty inevitable he'd end up being called Andy by his mates (but not his mother!).

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 28/03/2011 19:24

Christopher. Love the name, hate Chris.

My DD is called Jemima and I don't really like Jem or Mima so we just use her full name and so does everyone else. I do occasionally call her Jimmy much to my DH's despair!

Robsie · 28/03/2011 08:18

Thanks, I did try calling him Harry yesterday and it felt totally weird. I am sticking with Henry and he can call himself Harry later in life if he chooses. I like Jonah but not sure about Malacai.....he would be forever spelling it out to people. As a parent the only way you can control the shortening (or not) of your child's name is to give him/her a name that cannot be shortened. Not easy but there are some.

ellesabe · 27/03/2011 20:41

I don't think Henry is too formal... stick with it if it's the name you love - I'm sure he will grow up suiting it and you'll never imagine him as anything else!

I really like the names Jonah and Malacai but can't stand Joe, Mal or Kai.

Robsie · 27/03/2011 12:01

I have a 15 month old son called Henry. I love his name and still do but my husband and I are a little concerned his name is too 'formal' to carry throughout his life and we are seriously considering giving him the pet form of his name - Harry. We really like the name Harry, I think it is cute and suits any age, but it is much more common/popular than Henry (which is relatively uncommon in comparison). I am worried that once we start calling him Harry there will be no going back and I don't want to have regrets...help!

ThisIsYourSong · 26/03/2011 07:44

I love Lawrence but hate Lawrie, Loz etc or any of the nicknames for it. Still actually considering using it though and getting over it!

A1980 · 26/03/2011 00:11

I love David but I hate Dave so I would avoid the name for that reason.

marie14 · 26/03/2011 00:06

My mums friend has a Victoria and said from the start only Tori NOT Vicky and it's stuck, she's 12 and no one calls her vicky!

Bobby99 · 21/03/2011 16:00

I love James, it's my favourite boys name but absolutely hate Jamie. Not keen on Jim either. Good thing we had a girl!
