names you like but wouldn't use because you dont like the nickame

Lockets - I once taught a little girl named Anastasia - her nickname was Tansy - seriously suited her as she was a gorgeous, quirky girl - beautiful! Love Tansy but not keem on Anastasia myself :)

I think we're forgetting here that people will usually only call you the nickname if you introduce it in the first place.

If you dont like the nickname ensure you always call dc the full/proper name and thats what they will be used to, also at point of registering dc at school etc always stick to full version.

So a child who has been called "victoria" all their life will not suddenly respond to "vicky" in reception a bit like victoria beckham, never been known as "vicky".

At work we have a "christine" who will never respond to chris, you wouldnt even think of calling her that, yet we have a " chris" who we wouldnt dream of calling christine.

The nickname calling is not automatic and if someone tries it on you just correct them firmly.

Yes but that's why you don't pick a name if you don't like the nickname :) I remember my cousin Victoria being born and the accompanying announcement that she would never ever be known as Vicky. Yeah right, I thought. She has been nothing but Vicky since!

Presumably in 20 years time it is the choice of the namee not the parents?

I must say I have a chortle at parents who think they can prevent their child ever being called the short version of their name through sheer force of will. Enjoy storming their rugby club in 20 years time shrieking "it's not Dan it's DANIEL!"

Actually Maddy makes me think of someone who is mad.

Madeleine but loathe the nn "maddy" because it makes me think of the name "Madison"; a name that is extremely common here in Canada and makes me cringe every time I hear it.

Loads of parents round our way use the diminutive as the proper name IYSWIM. ie they're christened it which personally I don't like. I think it's better to have the full name.

I know Will, Joe, Ellie, Millie, Alfie, Charlie, Harry, Freddie. I think it will be hard when they're adults, Ellie, Millie, Alfie and Freddie i think in particular sound very babyish.

I love Elizabeth but not keen on Liz/Lizzie although Like Beth, Betty. We used it as dds middle name and her first is a name that's difficult to shorten

I know people called many of the names on this thread who are called the full name and NEVER called by the NN.

I am never called by the shortened version of my name. Because I never use it, never introduce myself as such, and don't respond if people use it, partly because it doesn't occur to me that they mean me and i'm not used to answering to it.

It's funny reading all the Rebecca posts... I have never ever ever been Becky thankfully as I also despise it. I have however been, B, Bec, Becs, Becsie, Becca, Boo, Reb, Bex... just about every nickname possible other than Becky - for which I will always be thankful.

I am having a major dilema at the moment as me & my partner decided on Sophia as our babie name (due in 13 weeks) and I think we have said it/thought about it too much I have now become bored of it - I also don't like Sophie or Soph... so now have really gone off Sophia - but OH will not budge and as I have no other names to offer up as suggestions feel I'm a little bit screwed tbh! lol

I love the name Presley for a boy but quite positive he would be nicknamed Elvis!! :-(

also for lovers of Francesca there is 'Cesca' (I don't like Fran/Frankie much either) and lovers of Alexander - Xander (although I like Alex/Ali too. And I do love Charlotte-Lottie, but not Charlie for a girl.

For those who have said they like Rebecca, Christopher and Tabitha - some alternative nicknames:

I know a Rebecca only ever known as Rebecca or Becca (never Becky), a Kristopher known and Kip and a Tabitha known as T/Tee.

I can't stand Becky or Becs or Bex, it just sounds so bad when the actual name Rebecca is really beautiful. Shame really.

I'm a Rebecca too, at school was always Rebecca, but now mostly get Bex! My dd is Isobel and has umpteen nicknames, Izzy at dancing, but we mostly call her Bel!

Love the names Christina and Christopher, but 'Chris' is just dull.

We have a Jonathan - our first born, l absolutely love his name. Fortunately at nearly 12 its never been shortened and I hope it stays that way. We had exactly the same thinking as the OP and the other 2 kids ended up with 4 letter names to avoid the problem.

I also have a 4 letter name and very occasionally its been lengthened which in some ways is worse than shortening!

Like Aura, but would be forever saying Laura so wondered if Lia was better. Perhaps Laurelia? Mmm...? Same with Ophelia? Love that too but DH doesn't.

My dd's Romilly and is now always called Roms or Rommas by most of her friends. Its a shame as i love her name. I have a Connie-Jean who is Connie on her birth cert as i like Connie but dislike Constance.
