Naomi? (and a couple of other possibilities!)

Hi

We are still musing on girl's names. DH has ruled out Rafaella ('to frilly') and Constance (a fat girl's name').

Just wondering what people think of Naomi? I love the name but only know of older Naomis. Also, all of the Naomi's I know are all Jewish (and/or American). Could we get away with it, given we are not Jewish? Middle name would be Hope.

Already have a DD called Arabel.

Other possibilities at the moment are Beatrice, Honor, Iolanthe and DH likes Liesl.

We are still clearly in the early stages of project babyname!

Naomi is very pretty and goes well with Arabel imo
Also like Beatrice very much :)

Bunnyfrance my DD is only 5 but I get irritated when people ask her name, she says NAYomi and the reply 'oh NIGHomi', how lovely. When she is a bit taller she'll probably smack them in the chops (small kid big attitude).
We call her Noni mostly (how she used to pronounce it) or Twinkle (which is another story and gets us some funny looks in Waitrose).

HalleLouja · 01/02/2011 11:29

Zoe
Eloise
Verity

The top one is my fave at the moment but loving Eloise too.

bunnyfrance · 01/02/2011 11:04

My sister is a Naomi. She complains that people always pronounce it NIGHomi instead of NAYomi

chaya5738 · 31/01/2011 12:59

Naomi is a lovely name (I would pronounce it Nay-o-mi rather than Nigh-o-me).

I also think Miriam is lovely.

mathanxiety · 31/01/2011 01:33

Beatrice
Honor
Iolanthe
Liesl
Adelaide / Ada
Hero
Naomi

Gorgeous names all.

Naomi is quite an arty Episcopalian name in the US as well as being popular in Jewish circles.

I like your DH's taste. Liesl and Hero are lovely imo - would he consider Juno?

I couldn't choose one, but Honor and Iolanthe are near the top for me.

SE13Mummy · 29/01/2011 22:59

Naomi is a beautiful name and goes well with Hope. My own DD is Miriam Hope, my Goddaughter is Naomi Grace. Neither set of parents is Jewish and it's not been something that has been asked of us since DD was born 20 months ago.

Rhubarbgarden · 29/01/2011 20:17

I know a beautiful little Naomi. Great name.

I love Liesl.

Helzapoppin · 29/01/2011 19:17

Thanks for the thoughts. When DH and I talked about it last night, we could not agree on how to say Naomi (he thinks with the emphasis on the OH sounds, I think with equal emhpasis).

He really, really likes Hero (?!)
With both like Adelaide, with Ada as a nn.

He says when he hears Honor, he can't think of anyone younger than Joanna Lumley.

My 2 year old wants to call the baby Daisy Doo. At this rate she might get her wish!

Eye-oh-lanth-ee

peanutbutterkid · 29/01/2011 17:02

What about Raquel? I went to school with one.

peanutbutterkid · 29/01/2011 17:01

My 8yo cousin is Naomi, she is
not Jewish
very creative
Flaming red hair

I don't like Beatrice.
How the Heck do you say Iolanthe?? Confused

cece · 29/01/2011 16:56

Naomi is nice but out of your list I love Honor.

freelancescientist · 29/01/2011 16:45

I've got a Naomi - it is a lovely name, feminine but not too girly. And her older brother is fond of pointing out that it is I moan backwards...She is the only one in the whole school if that helps with the choice?

pointydug · 29/01/2011 10:43

ghoul, where've you been?

BelligerentGhoul · 28/01/2011 22:31

Lovely - but I'm biased. :) And not Jewish.

Don't like Rafaella at all. Not over-fond of Liesl (Is that the name of one of the tribe in The Sound Of Music?)

Do like Constance, Beatrice, Honor and Iolanthe.

pointydug · 28/01/2011 20:11

I like Naomi a lot

120 · 28/01/2011 19:59

Like Naomi too. How would you say it? NAY-o-mi or Nay-OH-mee?

Helzapoppin · 28/01/2011 19:16

Lol @ Lies and Weasel. I'll mention that to DH next time he suggests Liesl!

onimolap · 28/01/2011 19:13

Naomi: I like it, and don't think you need to be Jewish to use OT names. (Does slightly remind me of Maoam sweeties, though).

Beatrice: OK

Honor: sort of OK

Iolanthe: lovely

Liesl: no - seems like a mixture of Lies and Weasel.

Bue · 28/01/2011 19:07

Of course you can get away with it! I know non-Jewish Naomis. It is such a beautiful and underused name.

Ooooh I love Naomi Honor (even though that's not what you're going for!).

ValiumSandwichTime · 28/01/2011 16:58

I love Honor and Naomi

I like that they're less frilly than Rafaella. I like Rafaella, but I wouldn't choose it.. Constance is a bit harsh

PlanetLizard · 28/01/2011 11:11

Iolanthe? No, it's this

PlanetLizard · 28/01/2011 11:10

Naomi is a lovely name. I know a number of non-Jewish Naomis. Goes nicely with Arabel too.

Beatrice - like
Honor - like
Iolanthe - like
Liesl - not keen

Or how about

Xanthe
Juliet
Lucia
Celeste
Marina
Estella
Miriam
Abigail
Felicity
Rebecca
Elise
Clementine
Corinne
Elodie
Maya
Natalie
Constance
Emma
