Manon - teasing potential

for a girl. I was sometimes asked when I was little if I was a boy or a girl Blush - to do with my horrible boys haircut and clothes I think. But do you think if my daughter was to get similar questions, the name Manon might turn into "man" and become distressing? Weird q, I know!

I don't particularly like the pronounciation Man-onn. It just doesn't sound very feminine to my ears.

hellymelly · 28/01/2011 22:07

Spiderlight do I know you in rl?

spiderlight · 28/01/2011 22:02

I know of a gorgeous little Manon, known as Nonni.

hellymelly · 28/01/2011 21:09

Well its the same spelling but completely different pronounciation,so they are two different names in fact. The Welsh is Manon with the last N clearly sounded, the French name has the N barely sounded,so its closer to Mano.

duchesse · 28/01/2011 19:07

PS: Didn't know it was Welsh! She lives in France and her husband is French but they wanted a fusion name. Her second child, who would have been Manon, was Merlin instead, which is still very Welsh!

duchesse · 28/01/2011 19:06

My sister would have had a Manon had she had a girl. Lovely name.

snowwombat · 28/01/2011 18:37

Gorgeous name, was on my short list for DD.

Patsy99 · 28/01/2011 18:30

And I know a 5 year old Manon here in London. Pn the Uk way, "Man-onn". It's lovely.

JemimaMop · 28/01/2011 18:26

I love it, it is very popular in Wales. DS2 would have been called Manon Fflur if he had been a girl.

prettymaryk · 28/01/2011 18:24

btw the welsh pronunciation isn't any different to the english...

prettymaryk · 28/01/2011 18:24

it's a beautiful name, i know a manon and as far as i know she's never suffered any name teasing.

Patsy99 · 28/01/2011 18:21

Manon is a Welsh name as well as French. Perfectly mainstream in Wales and it was on my short list, I love it. But, in the UK it would be said "Man-on" and I can see teasing potential.

seeker · 28/01/2011 17:53

Oh, don;t be silly! If you have any doubts about it, choose something else. There are thousands of names!

Expecting06112010 · 28/01/2011 17:51

DD had a friend called Manon. All was well with her name until the age of fourish when they learned to read. Manon became Boyon, Ladon, chapon essentially any male thing you could add the word on too.

cumbria81 · 28/01/2011 06:36

I LOVE this name. LOBVE it.

Othersideofthechannel · 28/01/2011 06:31

True but more people have read/seen 'Jean de Florette' than 'Manon Lescaut'. Pagnol is seen as being the cause of the names 'revival' in France.

Manon is the diminutive of Marianne or Marie-Anne. If you like the longer versions, you could perhaps put something different on her birth certificate but call her Manon so that she has the option to change it if she gets teased.

bunnymother · 28/01/2011 05:12

Read / see Manon Lescaut... The "heroine" was a courtesan, which many would equate to be a hooker in modern terms.

IngridBergmann · 28/01/2011 04:40

Whaddoes it mean in French?

Zaft · 28/01/2011 04:14

I taught a teenage one who didn't get teased at all. Lovely name, love Manon des sources as well.

missalien · 28/01/2011 00:27

I think its lovely. Am huge fan of manon des sources . I hear it in the french accent though . Silent end n if the brits could get used to it :-D

TheFarSide · 28/01/2011 00:22

It's great - go for it.

I think kids will find ways of making fun of all names.

Although I was told by a 15 year old the other day that one is not allowed to make fun of the name Mohammed because it would be disrespectful.

Plonker · 28/01/2011 00:16

Reminds me of watching footy when one of the opposing players is tracking one of our players down the field without him noticing. Cue screams from the stands of "man on!"

How is it supposed to be pn?

Rhubarbgarden · 27/01/2011 23:44

Lovely name.
