I heard this name today (pronounced ORiel), and thought it was really pretty, but was just curious to the general consensus surrounding it was?

How about Eiriol? It's a fairly uncommon Welsh name and means snowy / fair I think.

Sorry to lower the tone, but what about when she's a teenager and the boys start to snigger about 'Oriel sex'? Better to be aware of these dangers in advance.

Auriol is an alternative spelling. Pronounced exactly the same.

I was at school with both an Oriel and an Auriol.

Well it was aimed at a little girl, so I'm assuming it's generally a girls name, but I guess it could be either. I think I'd only use it for a girl though. hmmm.

I have a half sister called Oriel. I really like it. I've never met her Sadso have no idea what she thinks of it. She is much older than me 50 something I believe.

My great-great-great grandmother was called this. Her father was provost of Oriel College. I'm a Magdalen girl myself so I can't say I'm keen Grin

It's very quirky.

The only drawback for me, is that the welsh word for (art) gallery is Oriel.
