Formal name for nm "Ellie"

My DH loves Ellie as a name, but I like more formal names - old fashioned ones. Is Ellie short for anything so we can compromise? A family members DD is Eleanor so we can't use this one. Not that keen on Elizabeth. Thanks!

I love elise and hardly any around

elphabadefiesgravity · 16/02/2011 22:54

DD is Ellen and we always meant to use Ellie as a nickname but somehow it never happened.

Toomanyponies · 16/02/2011 22:48

My friend is called Ellie. Her 'proper' name is Alethea Smile

IwishIwasabodenmum · 27/01/2011 16:11

Agree with Math - there are loads of Ellies and Ellas around.

We named DD1 Eloise because we liked it, and also liked Ellie / Ella as nicknames. However, once here, we quickly realised how many Elies there are... so now she is firmly an Eloise, and we do not shorten her name at all (everyone calls her Eloise).

In fact in her old class - there were two Ellies, one Ella, but she was the only Eloise in her whole school (290 infant aged children), and in our new school there are two Ellas in her class, an Ellie... but again she is the only Eloise in the whole school (another 270 children). So that shows how popular Ellie is in comparison!

Sorry missed the part where you were reconsidering - agree with mathanxiety - lots of Ellie; Milly; Molly; Maisie and Daisy in use here

mathanxiety · 26/01/2011 23:29

Glad you're reconsidering. There are hundreds of them where I am. Millies too.

Love Ellie as a nickname. It's so feminine.
Could use for
Elsie
Elys / Ellis
Eloise
Elena
Eliza
Danielle
Mariella
Gabriella
Fenella.

DH just suggested Citronella and Cinderella.
I think not.

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 26/01/2011 17:57

We have an Eliana because DH wanted an Ellie, the other choice was Helena but I would have had to punch anyone who shortened it to Hels/Helen ( no probs with Helen at a name just not for me)

Bunbaker · 26/01/2011 17:54

I know one Ellie and the other Ellies I know are all called Eleanor. Lovely names.

SirBoobAlot · 26/01/2011 17:42

Eloise
Eileen
Ella
Estelle

And I know an Alicia who is Ellie for short, too, strangely.

jellybeans · 26/01/2011 17:31

Eloise

Lamorna · 26/01/2011 16:27

Gabriella?

MelinaM · 26/01/2011 16:08

Ellie is a lovely name, but I do agree with needing a 'formal' name to start with.
A few suggestions that can be shortened to Ellie:

Eilis
Electra
Eleri
Eliana
Elin
Elina
Elisha
Elissa
Elspeth
Elvira
Elysia
Helena

^Love the name Eloise sinkingfeelingSmile

UrsulaBuffay · 26/01/2011 16:00

'someone I know' has a 'just Ellie' and one of her middle names is Elizabeth. That's just daft isn't it? [/judging]

Sinkingfeeling · 26/01/2011 15:55

dd3 is Eloise - but everyone (except me) calls her Ellie.

Ilovemyscrumples · 26/01/2011 15:51

Elena?

FooffyShmoofer · 26/01/2011 14:30

Gabrielle ?

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 26/01/2011 14:27

CameronCook · 26/01/2011 14:26

Loads of Ellies round here - on its own or derived from Eleanor, Elizabeth, Michelle, Isobel.

MaryMungo · 26/01/2011 14:21

Elinor is top of our girl's name list. Elisabeth comes a close second. Eloise is lovely, too, come to think of it.

LaundryFairy · 26/01/2011 14:19

I worked with a lovely Ellie, full name Eloise. Her parents were Swedish.
