Bessie??

I'm getting close to due date and DH and I really want to have at least an idea of chosen baby name.

I really like Bessie (it was my gmas name), and, DH was going along with this as a finalist until the not-afraid-to-say-what-she-thinks-MIL said she didn't like it. DH suddenly also changed his mind about it (think I might be able to pursuade it back though Wink).

What do people think about it as a name? Do you automatically associate it with aunt bessies yorkshire puddings?

I know it's originally an abbreviation name but my gma had it as a name in its own right. Thinking of using Iona as middle name btw.

DH didn't go with betsy - said it sounded too american (and he's not a big america fan) :( I still prefer bess/bessie though - but that's prob as it was my gmas name so a little sentimental.

I like Betsy too. DD1 has a friend Betsy who is 20 now and it has suited her since we first knew her, when they were both 4.

Go for it. We have a Bess aged 5 months who is just delicious and we still utterly love her name. No-one has reacted negatively (to our faces!!) but we did get a bit of "Beth?" "No, Bess" at first (possibly less of a risk with Bessie, which our DD does get called often, but not officially). Love it!

A lot of adults would have seen Bessie Bunter and their grandparents would definitely have seen the character during their formative years.

oh cripes, never seen this bessie bunter before but it doesn't look good. But then, how many children will even have seen/heard of this bessie bunter.

we are seriously considering elizabeth on birth certificate but bessie in everyday RL.

Prefer Bess to Bessie, but really like both. Not a Yorkshire pud in sight! Are you sure you couldn't use Elizabeth as a given name? It would give her a lot more options when older!

No way DH will go with Betty I'm afraid. And starlight I don't know why but I associate BEssie with a cow a little too but no idea why Hmm

I love Bess. Would have it short for Elizabeth. Bessie - not quite so much, oddly.

Betty is lovely though, and so are Bette, Lizzie, Eliza, Liza, imo - but Bess I just don't like.

I love it, my dog is called Bessie but I wish we hadn't used it for her as I now want it on my shortlist!!

Snowangels - The Faraway Tree - I guess I must be showing my age (although I didn't read them in the 1940's but in the 1970's!).

I see in later editions Fanny has become Frannie and Dick is now Rick! Also Bessie becomes Beth as it is a more common abbreviation of Elizabeth.

I would go with Bessie though!
