Recent nutty names I have heard

Sigh-Anne.

I thought the woman was mispronouncing Sian, then saw the name written down. Sigh-Anne. I mean, what on earth...?

the other was a little boy called Ragen. As in Ronald Regan, but Ragen. Ragen? I am not a name snob, but I do draw the line at deliberately misspelling surnames and then using them as a first name! Grin

Don't know about Ragen but Ragenth is a perfectly legit Indian name.

lurkinginthebackground Plenty of fathers chose the name or sometimes it is the extended family that have chosen. Doesn't mean the mother has no say but she may have agreed to a name chosen by someone else but never seen it written in roman letters. Lots of different cultural reasons too.

There is a new girl in DD2's class called Kahluah. I wonder if she is related to Tia Maria? Perhaps Cointreau(h) is a cousin?

Bronte is a lovely girl's name and I went to school with an Araminta and Lucinda (Ralph Fiennes' nieces!).

Love the Loreal child, that's bloody cruel but funny.

Another wacky upper orders family I know gave their four children middle names of London train stations.

I absolutely LOVE some of these names!! Especially Storm, Aurora (sleeping beauty) and Xanthe, but unfortunately DP won't have any of them!
I also love Anastatsia which he doesn't like either 'sigh'

My mum used to teach a Steven Stevens and there was a Luke Lucas on X-Factor last night!

I don't get why Storm is seen as so unusual, I've known a few people with that name, and was almost called it myself.

There also seem to be a lot of "classic" names (eg. ones from Greek mythology) in this thread.

Some of the others are crazy though!

I know a Sigh-Ann except its spelt Siann. It never occurred to me it was weird.

My DS went to nursery with a boy called BJ. That's what he was called and that's what it said on his peg. I could never bring myself to ask the parents if it was short for something else like Brian James just in case it wasn't and I would end up sniggering. Lovely parents though, really nice people, it just seemed so peculiar.

DS also knows sisters who are Destiny and Miracle.

I work with new parents and it isn't that uncommon to ask the baby's name and find the mum doesn't know how to spell it, either because the father chose it or it is not an English name and they haven't decided on the spelling they will use in roman letters. Sometimes the names are misspelt by people recording them (hopefully not the registrars) I have seen Sinead written by a colleague as Shenade but assume that it wasn't actually spelt that way.

Not terrible at all, but I met a small girl recently named Benny-Soo. Her mother was Chinese, and was most excited to learn that I am British (we live abroad) and told me that she choose Benny-Soo for her DD because it was such a typical British name and she loves Britian.

Awkward.
