Wendy and Gladys

What do you think of Wendy. I am loving it, and it is currently top spot as a nn for our top name Gwendolen.
Do you think Wendy should be a nn, or a name it its own right?
I just love it!

Also pondering Gladys - it has been on our list for a while, but I am starting to love it more I think. It sounds so bright and cheery (obviously!). Trouble is two of my dc's (we have 4 dc's) are called Amos and Iris - is it too similar?

I need twins!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think Wendy is quite 1960s, a bit like Pam and Susan...
In about 15/20 years there will be lots of them, just as we have loads of Rubies and Evies at the moment.

Have you thought of Ruby, OP, would go nicely with Pearl and Iris I think.

Having said that, I like Wendy as a name itself, or Gwen, not so keen on Gwendoline (makes me think of Wallace and Gromit a bit!) Grin

I like Gladys, though, but it's one of those "old lady" names that hasn't made a comeback yet, a bit like Marjorie and Marigold.

CabbagefromaBaby · 19/01/2011 17:57

LOL Sacharissa!

and oh I did have an autnie Wendy as well. I'd forgotten about her as they got divorced. She was Ok, very curt and northern and stuff but she was alright.

Where are the lovely wendies of the world? there must be a club somewhere surely.

Sacharissa of course is delightful. Smile

CabbagefromaBaby · 19/01/2011 17:55

I really don't like the name Gladys. It looks funny.

and I have never known a nice Wendy - two absolutely evil Wendies but not one single nice one.

I couldn't do it, sorry.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/01/2011 17:27

Drippy? Humph Angry

Wendy I could see but Gladys is foul, sorry.

mrsweasleyismyalterego · 19/01/2011 17:25

also think gwendolyn is lovely but couldn't convince dh

mrsweasleyismyalterego · 19/01/2011 17:24

love gladys my granny's name.would have loved it for dd4 (dc8) but dh and dc's vetoed it sadly .still love it .

joydivisionovengloves · 19/01/2011 16:58

Gladys is awful. Please don't.

StickyProblem · 19/01/2011 16:36

I always think of weird Wendy in Peter Pan. Having said that, I do like it.
Is there a Welsh connection?
Sorry but Gladys is blue rinse for me too.

swanandduck · 19/01/2011 16:30

But that's the thing. It's the name of an extremely lovely mum not a baby.

Pinkjenny · 19/01/2011 16:26

My extremely lovely mum is called Wendy. She absolutely loves her name. I wouldn't use it though.

swanandduck · 19/01/2011 16:24

Gladys and Wendy Shock Shock Shock.

felicity10 · 19/01/2011 13:00

Have you heard of Gwendolina? Just a thought. Not keen on Wendy - sorry all wendy's, just reminds me of peter pan!

dundeemarmalade · 19/01/2011 12:57

my step-grandma rejoices in the name gwenhwyfar
eek

5DollarShake · 19/01/2011 12:51

Neither are at all to my taste - I suspect you are well ahead of the curve, TT. Grin

Gwendolyn is a good, strong name - I personally wouldn't spoilt it with Wendy (Gwenda, maybe?) and the less said about Gladys, the better. But you're definitely right on the 'not all children can be called Jack and Evie' point!

SacharissaCripslock · 19/01/2011 12:34

My name is Wendy.

Grin

It's a horrible name. I completely hate it. Don't do it to your poor innocent baby.

I've only met 2 other Wendy's in my entire life and there's a reason for this - it's an awful name.

Pasiphae · 19/01/2011 12:30

I have a SIL Wendy, would be strange on a baby for me. But cute nickname for Gwendolen.

Gladys is lovely idea, but it's too geeky mixed with old lady for me.

Hedwig3 · 19/01/2011 10:55

I like Wendy and would leave it as it is.

LaTristesse · 19/01/2011 08:51

Sorry, I don't like either name either! Whereas I love your other DCs names.... they sound very cool, while Wendy and Gladys sound more frumpy.

Wren from the list suggested above is lovely!

KittyFoyle · 19/01/2011 00:34

Had a lovely but very sad auntie called Wendy and a weird crotchety auntie called Gladys. But love Wendy, darling.

mathanxiety · 19/01/2011 00:04

Gladys and Wendy would raise a few eyebrows and not in a good way.
Gwen is a lot more hip as a nn for Gwendolyn.

Would you consider Gwyneth?

Eli, Amos, Pearl, Iris and

Chloe
Aster
Aven
Hazel
Willow
Zinnia
Saffron
Phoebe
Wren
Iola
Honor
Joy
Agatha
Dinah
Eve
Zoe
Keziah

Rhubarbgarden · 18/01/2011 23:41

I love Gwendolyn. Less keen on Wendy. Gladys makes me think of Gladys Pugh in Hi-de-Hi, but I think it could be quite sweet on a little girl. It would certainly be different.

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 18/01/2011 23:16

I quite like Gwendolyn, but prefer Gwen as a nn.

Don't really like Gladys sorry, it reminds me of Gladys Kravitz, the interfering neighbour on Bewitched.

Don't like Gladys, I'm afraid.

But Gwendolyn is lovely and Wendy is a sweet nn.

FunnysInTheGarden · 18/01/2011 23:07

Lovely names, but not Gladys and Wendy. At all.
