Wendy and Gladys

What do you think of Wendy. I am loving it, and it is currently top spot as a nn for our top name Gwendolen.
Do you think Wendy should be a nn, or a name it its own right?
I just love it!

Also pondering Gladys - it has been on our list for a while, but I am starting to love it more I think. It sounds so bright and cheery (obviously!). Trouble is two of my dc's (we have 4 dc's) are called Amos and Iris - is it too similar?

I need twins!

Where are the lovely wendies of the world? there must be a club somewhere surely.

Here's one! I'm a Wendy. :-) Have to say bear in mind kids are nothing if not annoying little gits original (ahem) and your child will end up being called either Wendy House, Trendy Wendy, Bendy Wendy or Wen'dy Wind Blows! Geddit? When de wind blows? Believe me I know from experience lol!

lightthebluetouchpaper · 27/01/2011 13:12

Wendy and Gladys? This must be a wind-up surely.

ThisFeelsWeird · 27/01/2011 12:25

Gladys is hideous. I would find it very hard not to snigger at that.

Hedwig3 · 27/01/2011 11:41

You can!

You would probably just find that you use Pearlie less.

Or... how about Sylvie?

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 27/01/2011 11:29

I love WENDY - it's my sisters name & I'm considering it for DC2 if it's a girl.

tummytickler · 27/01/2011 09:39

Duhart Thanks - I love Judith, Joan, and Virginia

Minione - I like Thora - thanks.

Raah - thanks! I love Shirley so much. It has been the very top of my list for years but worry it is too close to Pearl whom we often call Pearlie. Although she has asked to be called Peg now so maybe not an issue Grin
Pearlie and Shirley is a bit much isn't it? Or can i (somebody tell me I can!)

Gladys is really growing on me. I don't think of old lady/blue rinse at all. I think of Gladys Knight and glamour! Somebody suggested Wren. How beautiful! I have pinched that one for a middle name for DD (due in 7 days!) Thank you!

Meryl is lovely too. What about Nula/Nuala? Fleur? Your other DC's names are so lovely but Wendy isn't. It's a bit drippy. Gwendolyn isn't pleasant sounding either imo.

pinguwings · 25/01/2011 18:57

We used to sing a song...
'I'm Gladys the Bladder,
Urine a state
if emptying me, is left too late!'

And forever more that name will be associated with wee.

Raahh · 25/01/2011 18:50

Op, I LOVE your dc's names- everytime you post them, they always make think of 'Cold Comfort Farm' (which is one of my favourite books).

Flora is prob a bit popular,
but what about Judith?

Loved your early suggestion of Shirley.

I had a dog called Wendy- my mum named her. Wendy was a very cute beagle, but chewed all the furniture...she 'went to live on a farm'HmmSmile. I actually always thought it was a rubbish name for a dog....lol! As a nn for Gwendolyn I like it!

Minione · 25/01/2011 18:30

I'm not keen on Wendy however Gladys is growing me. Going by your other D's names I think you have similar taste in names to me (I love Pearl and Iris!), how about:

Ada
Blythe
Dulcie
Eliza
Flora
Florence
Kitty
Isadora
Thora
Theodora
Theda
Thea
Violet
Cecily
Clementine

CockneySparra · 25/01/2011 18:20

Gladys is a bit retro for my tastes.

I love Gwendoline, but Wendy is twee. Love Gwen, though.

ValiumSilverTongue · 25/01/2011 17:53

ps, Beryl is much nicer, and Meryl is absolutely lovely. See, I like old lday names if they're nice.!

ValiumSilverTongue · 25/01/2011 17:50

eeeooo

I do know a very nice Wendy but she is my own age. NOT for a baby.

As for Gladys! please!!!! It's totally awful.

I think Gwyneth is kind of cool. Pity about theeeeee Gwyneth. Can you get past that?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 25/01/2011 14:16

Ada
Agatha

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 21/01/2011 17:34

Ida
Enid

pookamoo · 21/01/2011 09:36

I don't think Beryl and Pearl is any worse than Pearl and Ruby (which I know is off the list)
How about Amethyst (nn Amy if she wants) ?

tummytickler · 20/01/2011 20:47

mathanxiety - We LOVE Beryl so much, but when I mentioned it on here I was shot down in flames Grin . Also a lot of people thought Beryl was a no-no with Pearl. I am not sure that is an issue though, what do you think?

MrsvWoolf - We also adore Doris, but dh decided against it as he thinks it sounds too similar to Iris and Amos.

pookamoo - I tried to get dh to allow me Queenie but he said no! Is fab!

darlingred - It makes me happy that you love being called Wendy! So many negative opinions, its nice to hear something positive.
Thanks all.

Glad you like Marigold.
Queenie I like for this theme!

darlingred · 20/01/2011 16:36

My name is Wendy and I love it. There are not many people called Wendy and I like that. Rather be called Wendy than Doris, Flora,Eunice or any other name that's been mentioned. When you give a baby a name hopefully you are thinking about that baby growing into an adult with that name.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/01/2011 16:15

What about Nerys?

LaTristesse · 20/01/2011 08:06

Oo, Flora... that's lovely!

Also heard Orla today which I love...

beijingaling · 20/01/2011 02:43

Gladys? Really?

Gwendolyn is lovely and Wendy is ok as a nn but vile as a first name. Didn't Wendy come about because some irksome little tot kept saying "My fwendy wendy" to the JM Barrie?

Gwendolyn goes well with your other kids. It also passes the jobs test. Imagine a news reader using the following in a sentence:

Prime Minister Gwendolyn X
Dr Gwendolyn X
Author Gwendolyn X
Actress Gwendolyn X
etc

Wendy does not in my opinion.

Amabel? Arabella?

mathanxiety · 20/01/2011 02:11

Helen?
Lois?
Eirene/ Irene?

mathanxiety · 20/01/2011 02:07

Dora?
Vera?

babybear1983 · 19/01/2011 23:25

Really sorry but I'm not a big fan, your other children's names are lovely though!
