if it is very popular in your area? I don't know any but think it rates up in top 20, so they must be out there somewhere.

Also DS is Caspar. The don't really 'go' I know but it doesn't matter does it?

Name is Joseph.

I agree with others. Joe/Joeph is much more common than Caspar. Personally I'm not keen on Joe, but that shouldn't matter to you.

If you want a similarly underused name like Caspar, I'd look at the ONS list of all boys' names outside of the top 100.

Clary · 18/01/2011 00:11

OP I think if you don't want a popular name then you should not choose Joe.

Ditto Matthew, James, Oliver, Josh, William. All lovely names but you are pretty much guaranteed to know a number of them.

If DS1 (who is 11) says "my friend Matt" he has to qualify it as it could be one of about five people!

elseIlltellyourfather · 16/01/2011 20:57

But SoupDragon, I might move to your area...

Thats what I thought, fel1x, have started to be a bit put off by its popularity. As I only have one DS, not at pre-school yet, I don'y know loads of children, so not knowing any doesn't count for much. It is the only other boy's name I really like though, that DH also likes (he is a pain when it comes to liking names).

I know one Joseph who's about 3, and a Caspar who's about 8.

avaj · 16/01/2011 19:16

I dont know any Joseph's or Joe's, but there are 3 John's in our primary one!

tammytoby · 16/01/2011 19:14

Very common round here, in Surrey. Caspar is much less overused imo.

Changeisagoodthing · 16/01/2011 17:33

I have 5 male nephews and 3 are called Joseph.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2011 17:32

Why does it matter how many there are in my area? Surely it only matters how many there are in yours.

fel1x · 16/01/2011 17:30

There's loads. Seems a bit odd to have an unusual name like Casper (lovely btw) and then a v common one like Joseph though IMO

cece · 16/01/2011 17:06

I know

1x 11 year old

1x 9 year old

2 x 6 year olds

That's it

PorkChopSter · 16/01/2011 10:44

I know 4 Josephs under the age of 5. One Caspar.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 16/01/2011 10:25

I have one (nearly 2.5) (known as Joe/Joey) and don't know many others his age at the moment - but he's not at nursery or anything yet, but there are a few older Joes at DD1's school.

I know what you mean about popularity - it's perhaps a little more popular/in top 20 than I'd've liked, but he was named after his Grandfather. It's also one of those names that suits any age and is not a 'trendy' name, it never really goes out of fashion I suppose.

Incidentally, I considered Caspar for DS2 (2 weeks old today)!!

ValiumSilverTongue · 16/01/2011 10:04

I know a fair few. But it's no Jack. Less popular than Max and Finn and other names I consider very popular.

NannyState · 16/01/2011 09:22

yes, I know lots of Josephs - four under 5 yrs old in my immediate circle - but I don't think that should put you off. It's a lovely, classic name.

ducknipples · 16/01/2011 09:19

nope, not a one Smile

KenDoddsDadsDog · 16/01/2011 08:49

New baby next door is Joseph and I know a couple of others. It's a great classic name though and won't date.

proudfoot · 16/01/2011 01:58

I know a few but haven't seen it on many young kids recently. Really lovely name IMO.

mathanxiety · 16/01/2011 00:06

Sorry, Caspar.

mathanxiety · 16/01/2011 00:06

I know absolutely none under 10 and I think it's a gorgeous name. Can't understand why it seems to have been completely dropped in my neck of the woods. It goes really well with Casper imo.

jojosmaman · 15/01/2011 23:25

I have a joe/ Joseph and there is another in his class but we love it, I would rather have a popular traditional name than a popular trendy name, esp for a boy.

minkiemoo · 15/01/2011 23:06

Love Joseph - most likely the name we will call our DC2 if it's a boy. Think it works well with Caspar, which is a fab name. Haven't heard either name at DD nursery or any of the baby/toddler things we do.

Yes it's getting more popular, but not worried about that. Husband and I both have very popular names and hasn't done us any harm!

annasophia · 15/01/2011 20:13

I know 3 Josephs under the age of 5 near us. Joseph is definately much more popular than Caspar, of which I don't know any.

aristocat · 15/01/2011 16:14

DS has 2 in his class, hes 8yo.
lovely name Smile

dont know any Caspars either

Hedwig3 · 15/01/2011 16:10

Meant to add, I also only know 1 Joseph aged 8 Smile

Hedwig3 · 15/01/2011 16:08

I only know 1 Caspar aged 4 and I know a LOT of children.
