Arthur is a family name that we are quite keen on - we like the shortening Art - I have never met a little Arthur, so was surprised to see it at no 94 last year. Is it very popular in your area, & one to be avoided as the next Alfie/Archie?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'm not too worried about the Artie farty thing TBH - if you're going to get picked on, you're going to get picked on whether it is name, hair, big ears etc. In a way an obvious name thing makes it likely to be about that rather than something more "personal"!! I was teased about my name and have far less long-lasting effects than my sister who was picked on about her "big nose"...

I know 2 - a teenager and an 8 year old.

The teenager's mum always encouraged nn Arth rather than Art because she was worried about Fart nicknaming - seems to have worked.

It's popular here in the west country, probably because of King Arthur being from here. My brothers name is Arthur, he's 24. And i know a couple of new baby ones.

I know 2 Arthurs who are 7ish. Its a lovely name - middle class north west. Have no idea if they like their name.

Clary · 15/01/2011 13:52

I loooove the name Arthur Grin

I know one who is about 11-12yo and know of another maybe a year older in this area (middle class east mids).

I know a lot of children IYSWIM (for example I know about 15 Matts of 5yo-11yo).

David Cameron has an Arthur of course tho they seem to use his second name.

The Arthur I know well likes it because he is the only one he knows. Never nicknamed AFAIK.

annasophia · 15/01/2011 13:06

It seems to be getting more popular round here (Surrey) - I know 3 under the age of 5.

BabyValentine · 15/01/2011 12:47

I don't know any - lovely name though.

pinkhebe · 15/01/2011 12:12

there are 2 in ds's class at school (yr 6)

Tamasine · 15/01/2011 12:09

I have one who will be 2 in March - nn Artie or Art.

Seems to be getting more popular - we know 2 others - but not tremendously so. Round here (at least) I would say it is still quite a "middle class" name IYKWIM

megsacat · 15/01/2011 11:07

I know one he's two.

theagedparent · 15/01/2011 10:44

I know 3. Age 9, 6 and 1

onimolap · 15/01/2011 10:35

I don't know any little Arthurs (the youngest I know must be in his 30s by now). Is one of the Cameron children an Arthur?

It might be gaining in popularity because of Bradley James.

I knew an Arthur a few years ago. I love the name and my ds who was 3 at the time had a conversation about names which went like this

DS: who called me L***?

Me: mummy and daddy choose it because we like the name,

ds: oh

Me; do you like your name?

Ds: yes but if you didn't call me it i want to be called Arthur Grin.

I have no idea where he got the name from but he was adamant that Arthur should be the second choice for his name!

DS is 8 and i have never come accross another Arthur.
