how popular is Arthur?

Arthur is a family name that we are quite keen on - we like the shortening Art - I have never met a little Arthur, so was surprised to see it at no 94 last year. Is it very popular in your area, & one to be avoided as the next Alfie/Archie?

I love Arthur but then I have a massive soft spot for vintage boys' names! I know of about five Arthurs (some are friends of friends children).

muminthemiddle · 06/02/2011 22:33

I don't know any little Arthurs but I do know Archies.

twizzlestix · 06/02/2011 20:27

I love love love Arthur, it's on my name list too and I don't know (nor have I taught) any Arthurs. Go for it!

tebbles · 27/01/2011 18:06

I know one Arthur aged in his 30s. I know several little Archies/Alfies.

Jojay · 27/01/2011 17:53

I know one, aged under one.

I don't think of it as a popular name in the league of Alfie / Archie.

I think it's a great name, go for it!

kensworth · 27/01/2011 17:49

the only one I know is my dad and as he is about80 i dont think its used that much but it is nice

AllieW · 27/01/2011 17:29

My two 1/2 month old is called Arthur. We love it.

RedRosie · 26/01/2011 20:08

Go for it. A lovely, classy, classic name.

Julenelle · 26/01/2011 20:02

It's a lovely classic name.

Agree with many that it won't be too trendy like Alfie / Archie because these names tend to be already shortened.

I do, however know of two Arthur's under the age of 5 (London area) so guess it's getting more popular.

scottishmummy · 26/01/2011 19:59

getting v popular.like it a lot

glasvegasmummy · 26/01/2011 19:53

I've been teaching for 12 years and never had an Arthur in any of my schools in Scotland or in N.Ireland so not overly popular around here, if that helps x

agirlcalledvicky · 19/01/2011 16:29

I have a DS 6 months called Arthur, so I am biased when I say I think it is a fabulous name! I don't know any others and we always have had nice comments about it. Hoping it doesn't catch on as a "trendy"name though.....

if my dc2 is a boy his middle name will be arthur after my grandfather. i know one other who is about 2 yo. lovely name. go for it.

LittleMsH · 18/01/2011 08:55

Arthur is our chosen name (due April). I don't know any (but it's my first so don't know that many babies!). I don't think it's as trendy as Archie/Alfie - and it's ace. It's such a nice name to say - lovely ring to it. I hope it doesn't start shooting up the charts too - but then it wouldn't stop me using it.

MaElsie · 17/01/2011 15:41

I was put off when dh first mentioned it because it's an old man's name, but now it's really growing on me and I'm thinking of it as a middle name. So I'm hoping it won't get too common!!

girlafraid · 17/01/2011 12:09

I know 2 little baby Arthurs - next big thing I reckon

Aims80 · 17/01/2011 11:49

my sister is a midwife in Chelsea and she's seen lots there (I only know because Arthur was on our list if we had a boy so I asked her!).

Fourleaf · 16/01/2011 16:10

I know one who is 3 and have met a baby Arthur (6 months ish). It is not common exactly (hence only 94), but definitely trendy, and on the way up. Think was a new entry in top 100 last year. We were going to call DS Arthur but am quite glad we didn't as there are SO many Alfies and Archies and an Arthur would prob be an Artie...

edam · 16/01/2011 14:26

I like Arthur. It's my cat's name. (Sadly looks like ds will be an only so won't get to use it for any other children.)

pettyprudence · 16/01/2011 14:23

I am expecting an Arthur (or a Betty) - its a family name for us too and I havent come across any others yet (but then i dont know many children). Already having to talk my mum out of shotening it to Art/Artie though..... let the battle commence!

FlorenceAndTheMachine · 16/01/2011 14:20

I know two round here - one who is 6 and one who is 1. Also know a 6 year old Archie

Clary · 16/01/2011 14:17

Really don't think Arthur will date as in sound too trendy.

It's a classic name (unlike Archie as such) - just look at all the WW1 memorials!

DS1 has just reminded me I was TA in a class last year with a small Arthur aged 5 now. So that's 2 I know and 1 I know of. Still a small number.

annasophia · 15/01/2011 22:21

I think all the Archie, Alfie, Artie, Bertie type names are very trendy and will probably start to date soon.

Firawla · 15/01/2011 22:20

I know one (age 2, possibly 3?) and thinking i may have heard it around playgrounds/parks etc. Definitely doesn't feel that uncommon nowadays, probably cos it has the same feel as Alfie, Archie
