Elfrida?

Any thoughts on the name Elfrida? I like Elfrida with Elfie or Freddie for short for a baby girl...I really want an unusual old english name.

Frida is lovely, Elfrida is not.

I know an Ella who has always gotten Elfie as a nickname by family.

If you want Freddie, go with Frederica.

Not sure.. but I really love the name Frida. (Spelled this way, as in Frida Kahlo.)

I do like Elfie, but some how, not Elfrieda.
However, I love Frieda.

I love the name!!!
It Is in the Thomas Hardy Novel, A pair of blue eyes.
A classy, beautiful and unusual name.
I would use it.

I came on to suggest Frederica but I see some other Georgette Heyer fans got there first.

My great aunt was called Elfrida. I never even considered it was a weird name until I was looking for baby names for my own (although he's a boy called Francis). In my experience the name will take on the character of your daughter and after a few weeks Elfrida will just sound like a baby girl's name to anyone who knows you. If you like it, pick it. ☺

We thought Freddie for when she was older. Its such a strange one because people love it or hate it. I teach art in a secondary school and all my students love it! They don't seem to find it unusual at all and say how they all wish they had unusual names...

When I first saw this I thought NO NO NO but by the time I got to the bottom of the page it has started to grow on me. Elfie is cute for a baby/toddler but what about when she's older?
DH has an unusual name and hates it although it does mean that people remember you more than any old plain named guy!

Brockley- FWIW I don't like it at allBUT you hae to go with what you like not what anyone else thinks!

I know an Elfhin though which makes me think of Elephants... needless to say she gave her DD a 'normal' name (her words).

Thanks everyone for feedback, I guess there is no name that everybody likes and the ones that a lot of people like end up being so common you can't win!

I love the name Elfrida.

When I was a young child, we had a wonderful neighbour called the same. She was German and she and her Polish husband came to live in our town in the early 1940's....refugees from the terrible things that were happening at home Sad She used to tell me wonderful stories about Germany, and make fabulous hot drinks Grin

Whenever I hear the name I think of the lovely old lady and her kindness.

I think you could use Ellie, Elfi or Frida as a shortened version.

I know a 6 month old Elfrida who is known as Elfie and I think it's really sweet. She is named after her grandmother which I think is nice as well as it means something.

At first I thought I liked Elfie. I've never heard it before. But then I said it out loud and it sounds like I'm saying healthy so that's put me off it a little bit. At first glance I saw 'Elkie' and I really like that. Elkie Brooks was one of my mums fave singers back in the day. Smile Elfrida sounds like one of the names of the ugly stepsisters. It's just not very pretty. Elephants suggestion of Aelfrith is really very nice. Much better than Elfrida.
