Edmund or Euan

DS1 is called Aiden. My DH really likes the name Edmund for DS2, who is due in a couple of months. However, despite good associations (Blackadder, Hillary, etc) and the fact I like Ed as an abbreviation, Edmund sounds really posh to me, which puts me off. I much prefer Euan as a name.

So... could I have advice on:

  1. Whether I'm right in thinking Edmund sounds posh

  2. Whether it would be odd to have an Aiden and an Edmund (who potentially might want to be called Aid and Ed)

  3. Whether Aiden plus Euan sounds too Irish (I love Irish names, but neither DH or I have any Irish blood)

Thank you!

Love the name Edmund. I have two friends with this name, they go by Ted and Ed. Neither are posh.

EightiesChick · 21/01/2011 10:03

Another vote for Edmund. Goes well with Aiden.

I love that quote DandyDan.

I haven't been on here for a few days, and DH and I had nearly ruled out Edmund in the meantime, but I'm now having a rethink seeing all these comments. Still lots of time to decide...

Thanks for all the input

Euan!

Don't agree with it sounding weedy at all, IMO Edmund is a weedier name than Euan.

Could say I am biased as DP is a Euan and he is a big strong outdoorsy type. Though I liked the name Euan long before he came along :)

LittlePushka · 16/01/2011 21:22

Why thank you so much for that DandyDan - what a wonderful quote! Grin

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 16/01/2011 13:33

Edmund - not that posh, goes better with Aidan and I agree with whoever said Euan sounds weedier!

DandyDan · 16/01/2011 13:25

Edmund- we nearly had an Edmund

Jane Austen said this of the name Edmund (in Mansfield Park) - " It is a name of heroism and renown -- of kings, princes, and knights; and seems to breathe the spirit of chivalry and warm affections"

LittlePushka · 16/01/2011 00:26

Edmund - gets Ted for short - we love it!!!

KristinaM · 16/01/2011 00:20

Euan

mathanxiety · 16/01/2011 00:02

I don't think it's too posh at all. It sounds more Olde Englishe than Edward maybe.

Euan is lovely too though.

MrsWuh · 15/01/2011 23:41

I really loved Edmund until I realised it sounds waaaay too much like 'Edmonton' which is where my husband and I went to school (in London, not Canada! :) ). Edmonton is about as far away from posh as your imagination will stretch - in fact, this is probably the first time that the words 'posh' and 'Edmonton' have ever appeared in the same sentence!

I still much prefer Edmund over Euan though - Euan is so weedy and lacking in good strong macho consonants!

annasophia · 15/01/2011 22:23

Prefer Edmund. What's wrong with sounding posh Smile?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 15/01/2011 18:14

I like Edmund. I always thought Euan was Welsh too so have learnt something today!

PlanetLizard · 15/01/2011 16:55

Prefer Edmund. I also think Edwin would go well with Aiden.

BelligerentGhoul · 15/01/2011 15:50

Edmund is lovely and not over-posh. Not fond of Euan.

MaryMungo · 15/01/2011 15:49

We have an Edmund and his name fits him perfectly. It may be a little posh on the baptismal certificate, but Eddie isn't posh at all and that's what he's called day to day.

Nightstar · 15/01/2011 15:31

Tony Blairs son - Euan Blair - Yuk!

englishmummyinwales · 15/01/2011 15:28

eandemum and dreamingofsun - The welsh spelling of Euan/Ewan/Ewen is Iwan. It's generally pronounced the same, although a welsh speaker told me it should really be pronounced 'Yew-AN'.

There is often confusion with Ieuan, which as you say is pronounced differently.

yama · 15/01/2011 13:58

Edmund definitely posh (but lovely).

Euan is a great name and Scottish rather than Irish.

smokinaces · 15/01/2011 13:55

We were going between Edward and Ewan with DS2 and decided on Ewan and even though we like Ed as a nickname, the whole name was a bit "posh" for us still!

I do prefer Ewan with a W though, it just doesnt look right to me with a U.

ComeAlongPond · 15/01/2011 13:50

I love Edmund, but don't really like Euan.

megsacat · 15/01/2011 11:05

Like Euan dont really like edmund much prefer Edward.

AnnOnimous · 15/01/2011 10:47

I love Euan, but Edmund leaves me a bet Confused I wouldn't say I actively disliked it, but it does remind me of old men in knitted cardigans with zips and slippers.

Fink · 15/01/2011 10:41

Don't think Edmund is too posh and definitely prefer it, especially with Aiden.

Euan is much more common (in terms of number of young boys called it rather than social class), which could be a pro or con depending on your pov.

Euan is also prone to misspelling (as is Aiden I suppose so at least you've already been there).

Euan and Aiden as a combo do suggest Gaelic roots, but I wouldn't let that stop you if you like it.
