My husband thinks it would be a really good idea to call DS2, a shortened version of our surname. He saw it once on a Harry Enfield programme and ever since he's thought of it as a brillant boy's name.
What do you think?
Is there any circumstance that Billy Williams might be acceptable or owen Owens Etc?
I think this is mad personally.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I know a Colin Collins.

Sarsaparilllla · 16/01/2011 02:24

I think the Harry Enfield programme is your clue here...it's funny when people have silly names

This, it's a joke, don't do it to your child, it shown no imagination at all, and imagine how they'll feel when they're older and they find out they were named after a comedy sketch Confused

deemented · 15/01/2011 14:04

headfairy - i was just going to post exactly that!

Clary · 15/01/2011 13:59

I know a William Willis (outs self).

He's known as Billy mostly, FWIW.

I also think it's slightly, ahem, odd.

Harry Harrison? Bertie Burton? Jake Jackson? Not for me, sorry.

I know a Donald McDonald as well, he's a vicar, fabulous chap. Less of an issue if Scottish maybe as relatively common (ie Donald, son of Donald).

I also know of a woman called Anna Hannah (Hannah is a surname one comes acorss round here) but that was her married name.

roflle at some of these! (does that give you a clue OP?)

I met a Huw Huw once, I kid you not. I also know a David Davies and a Richard Richardson. And I don't live in Wales, although not far away.

Not the same, but my Dad used to work with an Ann Drew.

CuppaTeaJanice · 14/01/2011 19:35

I went to school with a Kellie Kelly, so it's not just boys inflicted with these ridiculous double names!

spiderlight · 14/01/2011 19:31

I know of a Michael Michaels.

cocoachannel · 14/01/2011 18:52

This is something which could happen with our surname being a __son. DH was quite up for it. Luckily we're having a girl...

I always think of Neville Neville, father of footballers Gary and Phil.

headfairy · 14/01/2011 18:47

But Tom Thomas is Pontypandy's premier mountain rescue pilot and no one laughs at his name :o

happywheezer · 14/01/2011 18:43

Thank you everyone for your thoughts.

I'm surprised though with the amount of people we all know with suranmes very similar to christian names. I shall hunt down the actual Harry Enfield clip and post.

Don't do it to your child.

I know a Colins Colins.....and it is with an S on the first name too, Colin Colins would have been bad enough, but that's a joke!

confuddledDOTcom · 14/01/2011 02:02

I knew a Bill Williamson, took me ages to figure out what his name really was Blush It's something I'd avoid personally, although my surname is similar to a boys name and I'd like to give it to a boy (with his surname) if we had one.

You get people thinking it's a mistake (like Dr Gordon Gordon from Bones).

musicmadness · 14/01/2011 01:54

I wouldn't personally.

I had a Michael Michaels as a teacher. He really regretted letting his first name slip to a bunch of teenagers who would take the piss constantly Blush

shouldnotbehere · 13/01/2011 22:59

Oooh I know a John Jones too.

My maiden name is Lewis and my parents half considered Lewis Lewis for my brother, but decided against it.

shouldnotbehere · 13/01/2011 22:57

I love it, I know a Trevor Trevor, a David Davies, and an Owen ...........-Owen (double barrelled surname). I think all these people like their names.

AnnOnimous · 13/01/2011 22:26

I know two Donald McDonalds.

And I once met a woman called Stewart Stewart! Seriously

happywheezer · 13/01/2011 22:24

Perhaps it is him!
His family are all from West Wales.

exexpat · 13/01/2011 22:21

Agree with choccy - used to be normal in Wales, I think I have a few ancestors called Evan Evans or similar - but I think the habit died out for very good reasons....

Surely your DH doesn't seriously think that a name he got from a Harry Enfield show could be a good idea? Next stop, interesting vintage boutique called 'I saw you coming'. Or maybe that might actually work...

choccyp1g · 13/01/2011 22:17

COURWSE what sort of a Welsh spelling is that? I mean course of course.
OMG doesbn't sounds a the name of a farm. That's the other method of identifying who you are talking about. Tacking the name of the farm, or the street name onto the family name. So you'd get Williams Coed-y-Brain or Lewis Pant-y-Glas.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 13/01/2011 22:16

please don't do that.

i know a girl who called her baby connor connors. people snigger when they hear it. i mean WHY would you? there are millions of names to chose from. be a bit more imaginative.

COCKadoodledooo · 13/01/2011 22:16

Worked for Magnus Magnusson Grin

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/01/2011 22:12

There is a Robert Robson where I work.

choccyp1g · 13/01/2011 22:12

Well of courwse it doesbn't work for girls on account of the whole surname ethos being about who your father is (supposed to be).

choccyp1g · 13/01/2011 22:11

Oh yes I remember a few Bob Roberts' too.

It doesn't work for girls though. Blodwen Blodwen anyone?
