Were you named for a relative?,a celebrity?,a character from a novel? or did your parents just like the sound of the name?

Bitching, but your name is so pretty!

BitchingAroundTheClock · 11/01/2011 22:12

I brother got a good long standing (if rather dull and incredibly common) family (fathers side) name.

I got lumbered with the name of some distant aunt that we hardly ever saw who had lost her husband just before I was born Hmm

Who'd have 'em !

Mrsbell · 11/01/2011 22:03

My Grandad chose my name as he didn't like my Mums choice. I'm glad she listened

SingingSands · 11/01/2011 22:00

I was going to be called Gayle, after the little girl next door, mum liked the name and in those days I take it there was no wringing of hands and thinking "I can't name my child the same as the one next door"!!

But instead, she overheard another mum on her ward call her baby my current name and so she thought "I like that better" and changed it. Gayle remains as my middle name.

In short, my mother is not terribly original with names.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/01/2011 21:58

My name says

BORN IN 1980.

Just like the other 8 bajillions girls with that name, also born in that year.

Thanks, Mum.

DuelingFanjo · 11/01/2011 21:57

I was named after a song sung by Joan Baez. There is another much more well known song with my name in it which people sing at me all the time and I hate.

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 11/01/2011 21:56

I don't know who chose my first name or why,but my dad wanted to call me Esther, after an aunt of his.My mum refused, because our surname began with an E and had an s shortly after it.The two together sounded like a pot plant,so they compromised with Estelle as my second name instead.

lovinme · 11/01/2011 21:53

My mum wanted to call me Victoria,my dad wanted to call me Jordan they settled on Kristyanne vv glad I wasn't called either of those names but I hate my name I wish I was called something cool lol

MoldyWarp · 11/01/2011 21:49

mother was pretentious

PartialToACupOfMilo · 11/01/2011 21:42

I was named after a book - luckily the book was named after the main character and is fairly normal Smile

eyeofhorus · 11/01/2011 21:39

middle name rebecca cos my mum watched the b+w film before going into labour. My ds and dd have names we chose cos we liked the meaning of them and they are unusual.

euracantha · 11/01/2011 21:26

I was three weeks overdue when I was born My, uncle said that as Id been swimming around for so long theyd better name me after the top swimmer who had won the gold.So that is why I`m Euracantha.

CammieP · 11/01/2011 21:12

My mum decided what my name was going to be when she was about 11. Luckily my dad agreed with her! My sister was named after my mum's favourite book, with her middle name after our great grannie. My brother was named after a famous Irishman that we are related to, with his middle names being a family name and my dad's name. I always wished I had 2 middle names like my brother!

jojosmaman · 11/01/2011 20:22

My uncle was supposed to be Cary after Cary grant and nana sent grandad off to have him registered as Cary. Apparantly an error meant he was registered as Gary.

No-one believed dear grandad when he said he hadn't noticed until it was too late! Grin

Caoimhe · 11/01/2011 19:33

My mum made up my name! (Thanks for nothing, Mum Hmm)

Tillyscoutsmum · 11/01/2011 19:32

I am named after my paternal grandmother.

I was supposed to have her christian name and a different middle name but my dad went to register me after "wetting the baby's head" and was a bit drunk so he registered both first and mn after her (she died before I was born). It really freaked me out as a child when we used to visit her grave and see my name on the gravestone Confused

AnnOnimous · 11/01/2011 19:27

My grandfather died a few weeks before I was born, I got the feminine version of his name.

Ann is not my name lol.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/01/2011 19:23

I have absolutely no idea! Must ask.

MentalFloss · 11/01/2011 19:03

I am named after my Mum's grandmother.

My DS1 is named after my grandfather
My DD1 is named after my DH's grandmother
My DS2 has a name I loved and DH loved but his middle name is my dad's name
My DD2 was named because of the music that was playing on the radio when she was born and then her middle name is after my best friend.

ivykaty44 · 11/01/2011 18:54

My dad named his brother and my dd1 and my mum named dd2, they liked the name and my mum named me and my cousin didn't like it so they changed the name.

my dd's named their brother apparently when they got to the hospital he was Harry and by the time they left he was Charlie Grin he is a Charlie though

looblylu · 11/01/2011 18:46

My parents let my sister name me (she was 7)
and she decided to name me after her favourite character on Neighbours Hmm

She did insist when we got older that she named me after the company that made the bin that was in the Maternity ward since thats where she wanted to put me...

The joy of siblings!

Fenugreek · 11/01/2011 18:38

I was going to have a pretty, interesting name. Then when I was born they thought "what if she grows up to be ugly? Or fat? Or really dull and mousey? We'd better give her a really unremarkable name so she can fade into the background"

True story.

Thanks Mum and Dad. You really had faith in me from day one.

Goldberry · 11/01/2011 18:15

I was named after my Grandfather (unusually for a girl!), who died before I was born. It's a name which can be male or female, but is spelt differently according to gender.

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 18:06

I'm named after my Mum's best friend at Uni.
My middle name is the name my biological Mum gave me. (I'm adopted)
DD's middle name is the name of my best friend at Uni.
