ok, not a cheery topic, but I've noticed that there have been quite a few threads on here about name regrets and people wanting to change their DCs names... and it's got me wondering what the names that people regret are? are there any names that crop up more regularly than others?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BuntyPenfold · 13/01/2011 09:14

alypaly Stacey is his first name; he is a dark-haired handsome outdoors type.

This week I met a Zois - yes, Zoe and Lois combined.

ValiumTinselton · 13/01/2011 09:09

Martha is a nice sound. I hear the sound and I like it. What I don't like is that it's very popular in one demographic. But it's not oo la la enough to be a sleb name. Don't know any slebs who called their daughter Martha. Tallulah, Blossom and Scarlett yeahhh.

If I had one of those names and Jane as a mn, I'd use the Jane.

Jane was like Grace in the 70s but now it is a bit more refreshing.

AnnOnimous · 12/01/2011 21:17

I know of twins Natalie and Natasha, and their T's get dropped too.

I also know two Godfrey's and a girl called Happy.

Pancakeflipper · 12/01/2011 21:07

Oh I love the name Jonathan.... I rather fancied it for our boys but it didn't make that final cut. Everytime I hear it I go "ooh" - I like the name Johnny regardless of condom associations.

My FIL was rather put out we didn't opt for his name Merlin as a name for out boys.

Bumperlicious · 12/01/2011 21:02

I don't regret dd1's name, I love it. But I do sometimes wonder if it actually suits her.

Fimbo · 12/01/2011 14:57

I hate my own name, has "T" in the middle which everyone drops so makes it sound horrible.

My biggest regret is the 2nd of dd's middle names, at the time dh and I only thought we would ever have 1 child, I had chosen her first name and then her middle name after my mum and he wanted something with his family connection in it. It is a surname and his mother's maiden name and it is awful. Dd hates it and refuses to acknowledge it.

lexxity · 12/01/2011 14:54

I know of a Jakey-George.

My boys are both unusual and not regretted.

moonbells · 12/01/2011 14:53

I hate my first name and swapped it for my middle. Mum told me once that I nearly got called Nicolette. I am so glad I wasn't - my actual one is bad enough!

I wanted Jonathan for DS but DH didn't like it. I suggested Samuel as well, but that also got torpedoed. Luckily he was happy with my third suggestion and it does rather suit our little man.

wonderstuff · 12/01/2011 14:47

One of dh's mates actually laughed out loud at dd's names, while she was there!! V. rude, but I just feel awful about it

mummydarlingsausage · 12/01/2011 14:46

i regret dd1's name which is Amelia. i don't usually do regrets but i have to say if i could go back in time i would not have gone with it. it is a lovely name but so popular and because she is my first dc i didn't consider the popularity at all.
i myself have a popular name from my generation and there were 3 of in may class. i have gone for unusual names for ds and dd2 and never regretted those choices.

TooManyButtons · 12/01/2011 14:44

When I picked my dd's name 13 years ago, I thought it was lovely and unusual. That year it was the number 1 girls name and hasn't really moved since (Olivia)

TheSleepFairy · 12/01/2011 14:33

wonder my girls names rhyme (one is Eve & it really suits her)
I didn't really think about it at the time but now I have a little inner cringe whenever I introduce all 3 girls at the same time Blush

pinkhebe · 12/01/2011 14:33

I regret naming ds1 Jonathan, it's so boring compared with others, but he loves it (he's nearly 11) he's been saddled with my maiden name as a middle name, think he might be slightly embarassed when he's older as it's Rodger snigger

merryberry · 12/01/2011 14:25

My middle name is Nadine, because my mother thought it vaguely Russian and she had a substantial crush on Yuri Gagarin in her teens and twenties.

I don't regret it bitterly, but regret it in a kind of well that was utterly pointless for me way.

wonderstuff · 12/01/2011 14:16

I like my dds names but they rhyme and sound awful together, wish I'd dropped the first name and given her her middle name - Eliza as a first name, I think it suits her more as well.

My nan never forgave my great nan for letting my great great nan call her Winifred - she has always been known as Mary.

I know two Grahams who hate it and are known by their middle name.

FooffyShmoofer · 12/01/2011 14:04

Ah, well I can relate to that Smile

My DH is Narcoleptic. I was getting all excited at the possibility of a fellow sufferer, they are so rare.

Sorry, not hijacking.

There is also a Caylum and a Kempton and a Maisie Boo. I wonder their parents ever have regrets?

shouldnotbehere · 12/01/2011 13:39

ooh I know a Zena and a Gaye, they are both in their 50s.

I have never known of anyone in real life, admitting to having regretted their childs name.

I do have a friend who uses her middle name (Jane) rather than first name (Rhiannon). At seven years old, she decided she preferred Jane, and asked everyone to call her that. I think they are both nice names, but Jane does suit her. I dont think her parents have ever minded

(Hope she isnt on mumsnet).

TeaisForMugs · 12/01/2011 13:36

I sort of regret my DD's name -my other girls all have quite classic names and then when I was pg my 3 year old was very into a certain cartoon and we thought it was a cute name. I did want to call her Martha but dp was set on the name she has now.
I wouldn't ever change it because she is 19 months now and it is her but if I had the chance I would change her middle name as I don't know what I was thinking other than I was tired and stoned from the G&A so just agreed with DP. Hmm

NarcolepsyQueen · 12/01/2011 13:31

I joined Mumsnet when I was a few weeks pregnant and it just seemed like I had Narcolepsy FooffyShmoofer!

KnittingRocks · 12/01/2011 13:31

Shiny??? Shock

There really should be laws against it! Grin

Poor poor children. But, hey, they're different innit? Hmm

FooffyShmoofer · 12/01/2011 13:16

DS is in school with a Shiny, a Zanda { if you must, isn't it Xander?), and a C-anna.

NarcolepsyQueen are you really narcoleptic? Hope you dont mind me asking.

NarcolepsyQueen · 12/01/2011 13:08

I started secondary school in the mid eighties - and we thought it was hilarious at the time

Bue · 12/01/2011 12:38

But Gaye was a fairly common name a few decades ago - there wasn't anything funny about it. I know a Gaye and I still think it's a nice name! (I might be in the minority there.)

I think people often regret trendy/popular names the most.

NarcolepsyQueen · 12/01/2011 12:30

I went to an all girls school with a girl called Gaye too 5inthebed, and her surname wasnt much better bless her!

hatsybatsy - a friend teaches a girl with the name Lanesra.....Arsenal backwards :-(

5inthebed · 12/01/2011 12:01

I used to go to school with a girl called Gaye. Poor girl.

My friends little boy has Bear as a middle name, it suits him though.

I used to work with a lady called Zena and her brother was called Napoleon!
