ok, not a cheery topic, but I've noticed that there have been quite a few threads on here about name regrets and people wanting to change their DCs names... and it's got me wondering what the names that people regret are? are there any names that crop up more regularly than others?

My DS1 has an unusual name which has been in our family for yeeears. It's very, um, classical.

I sometimes wish we had just used it as a middle name, as it is a bit odd and is always, always pronounced wrong. I just know he'll be picked on at school for it.

Thankfully, he does seem to have a strong personality, so he may be able to carry it off.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 16/01/2011 21:07

I love Esther! Very pretty.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 16/01/2011 21:06

I regret not giving DD2 a middle name...she's 2.10...is it too late?

strandednomore · 16/01/2011 21:03

Martha is a fab name. I've never heard anyone call it unattractive or frumpy.

Horses for courses I guess.

tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 01:03

chipmonkey is it cosby?

I hated my first and middle name. I was born 1976 and never heard of either. my middle name became popular in early 90s and my first name is just breaking through just now.

I still dont like middle name but do like first name.

I always though old lady name and hated that when I was a kid I never found even a key fob with my name on it.

despite that I named dd an unusual name and have only heared one othe on mn. it never comes up on mn name thraeds and like to keep it to my self as I love that its so unusual and suites her so much.

my name is Esther btw, but people would always cal me hester wich I hated..

I really regret changing mind on dd3's name after my cousin called her dd, born the day before, the name I had chosen (it was our granny's name so not too surprising and we both had no idea the other was considering it).

In a hormonal panic we chose classic name we felt was still a little unusual (other dc's have uncommon names) only to move and find it to be extraordinarily common in her age group. Two of her closest friends share it with her and the friend from her reception class we had round for tea today shares both name and birth date! Longing for the day she decides to be called by her middle name, our original choice.

theresapotatoundermysink · 14/01/2011 10:55

Names like George, William, Charlotte etc are always going to be popular but haven't dated.
And pretty much every name on the planet will be shared with thousands of people! Variations, middle names and last names are what makes it individual.

Karia · 13/01/2011 16:44

My brother used to go to school with a kid called Nike. Also there was a lad in our area called Burberry. :(

coccyx · 13/01/2011 13:06

caitlyn, and obvious double names usually ending in Mae...yuk chavvy

bigbluebump · 13/01/2011 11:56

Popular names not only mean you have to share your name with many others, but they also tend to fall out of fashion and start to feel dated more than more timeless classic names.

tammytoby · 13/01/2011 11:51

"I don't understand why so many people regret 'popular' names."

Because the whole point of naming something or someone is to identify them. By sharing a name with thousand others that purpose is somewhat defeated.

Raahh · 13/01/2011 11:32

just read some of these- surely Natalie and Natasha are essentially the same name?

chipmonkey · 13/01/2011 11:09

I don't regret ds1's name as it does suit him but it meant he had the same name as a character in a 1970's show. I thought it wouldn't be an issue but the show was more popular than I remembered and has since had a spin-off movie. Ds1 is 14 now and gets the odd FB request from some people who think he has something to do with the character but he just blocks them.

belbos · 13/01/2011 09:55

I regret my daughter's name. It's not horrible but I just find it a bit princessy and it doesn't suit her at all. I wish I'd gone for Anna over Annabel. Was also gutted to see that it was the 40th most popular name in 2010 (the Annabelle spelling that is!) according to Baby Centre!

theresapotatoundermysink · 13/01/2011 09:46

I don't understand why so many people regret 'popular' names. Names tend to go around in circles and have moments of popularity. If you like it and it suits your DC why regret it because you know a few others.

I met someone last week whose sons middle name is Pickle. Now that's a name to regret.

mistressploppy · 13/01/2011 09:27

I have an acquaintance who was named Lionel but changed it when he was 18 - to Trevor

AllOverIt · 13/01/2011 09:23

That should read 'next', obviously...

... though a 'bed nest' sounds rather nice....

AllOverIt · 13/01/2011 09:22

Girl in the bed nest to me in the hospital called her DD....

Wait for it.....
