Heard this on the news not so long ago (obviously linked to the Meredith Kercher case), but I absolutely love the name. What do people think?

nooo

Not now. I used to think it was ok. But I can't forget the association with a violent death now.

Mousesmummy · 09/01/2011 15:06

It is a nice name but yes straight away I just think of that case - like Madeleine (McCann) for me.
That said, the next generation will not have the same associations with the name so if you love it, why not?

ShowOfHands · 09/01/2011 15:06

It's beautiful.

But I predict it will become more popular

deemented · 09/01/2011 15:07

Depends - for a boy or girl?

Fatimalovesbread · 09/01/2011 15:07

I love it, it's on my list.
I'm a big fan of grey's anatomy so it makes me think of that instead :)

Meglet · 09/01/2011 15:09

I wouldn't bat an eye if someone gave their child a name like Meredith / Madeline etc. It seems sad to banish a name because something terrible happed to someone with the same name. The child will grow into a name and the headlines don't last forever.

(Names like Myra / Adolf would be a no-go though).

Secretwishescometrue · 09/01/2011 15:10

I think its lovely and tis Grays anatomy that springs to mind for me not the other one till I read the first reply! It's a great name imo classy elegant name that can be shortened to Merry which is so cute :)

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 09/01/2011 15:14

I quite like it, but it's the name of a male character in a TV show I like, so find it hard to think of as a girl's name (which is daft as he gets teased for it being a feminine name!)

If you like it, use it! Grin

jungleboogie · 09/01/2011 15:15

I only know one, and he is in his twenty's now. Is it for a boy or girl?

flopsy1974 · 09/01/2011 15:17

Definately a girls name.

Surprisingly lovely name, had never thought of it before, and no, i would not automatically link it to the death case, despite being a news junky.

flopsy1974 · 09/01/2011 15:25

Where I live there are lots of little 'maddies' around so the Madeline McCann case doesn't seem to have put people off.

I love Meredith, so soft and pretty.

I only know girls called this.

Nightstar · 09/01/2011 17:01

It always makes me think of Dawsons Creek. I would never never have made the association with the girl who was killed.

I really wanted it, I wanted a girl and to call her Merry (nn) as it has such a happy ring to it, also because I'm a LOTR geek and so i could kind of slip in a name from it. But my DH said no....

Maybe if we have two I can use it for the second.

cowboylover · 09/01/2011 20:09

I really like it and did connect it with anything else but maybe I dont watch enough of the news!

wigglesrock · 09/01/2011 21:11

I always think of it as a very American name and not in a bad way, maybe its because I've only ever heard it on TV shows, but my friend has married a woman called Meredith, he calls her Mere and its really nice when he says it Grin

Hedwig3 · 10/01/2011 10:09

I know a man named Meredith (always known as Merry) so it sounds very masculine to me.
