I think it's a fine name.

People thinking it's frilly are recalling either Tristan in All Creatures Great & Small (not that Peter Davison was frilly really), and "Tristram" who was the posh bespectacled little boy (with page-boy haircut) who lived next-door in the sitcom George & Mildred back in the 70's.

"I must be one of the few people who don't think it's a frilly name...!"

Well, if you don´t think that it is,isn´t that all that matters?

And just because some think it is, it doesn´t make it so!

Valium has hit the nail on the head.

ValiumTinselton · 05/01/2011 09:46

ps, I'm in Ireland. Funnily enough 'Isolde' (and Iseult) have caught on here, they would be chosen by the type of mum who might choose Esme or Dulcie in the UK (if that makes sense). But I've not come across a Tristan child.

ValiumTinselton · 05/01/2011 09:42

I don't like it. It sounds like triste and priss and cissy.

I prefer Christian. similar sound but stronger.

smother · 05/01/2011 09:36

sorry, all creatureS

smother · 05/01/2011 09:36

I think Tristan and Isolde... being an educated type of course...

Wasn't there a Tristan in 'all creature great and small' too?

I like it as a name - different without being too wierd - I know a little boy called Tristan and he's very sweet.

diddl · 05/01/2011 09:14

Don´t think it´s frilly, but it´s not as nice (imo) as Hamish which is bloody fantastic!

Tristan James is nice.

coldtits · 04/01/2011 20:35

In a Scottish accent it's lovely. If you don't live in Scotland, don't do it.

coldtits · 04/01/2011 20:34

tristan in Scotland sounds intelligent and manly. Tristan in Surrey sounds like he's either going to be a hair dresser, a fashion designer or an air steward.

If you're happy with that, go for it.

MissyPie · 04/01/2011 20:32

I'm an England dwelling Scot, and I love the name Tristan - this name comes from my favourite movie.

I did have this in mind if I had a son but DP did not agree - he found it weird that I wanted to name our child after someone I fancied in movieland ha ha (although he secretly loves the movie :))

I'd imagine Tristan would get a lot of stick from classmates etc, but no more than a William or Jedward :) :)

Komondor · 04/01/2011 20:22

I know a Tristan, and he is rather lush.

I dont think its frilly.

Highlandgirl · 04/01/2011 20:13

Whoooohoooo for the Scots in London...!!! back to freerange

I met a Tristan years ago at a party, who was just lovely, stunning to look at but also just a really nice guy and not frilly at all..

I am biased I admit as it's my dp's name,but I've always loved it.

Tillyscoutsmum · 04/01/2011 20:10

Its posh mummy's boy to me as well...

indiechick · 04/01/2011 20:09

I work with one and he's not frilly at all, he's a drummer in a heavy metal band with long blond hair.

freerangeeggs · 04/01/2011 20:06

Highlandgirl, I'm a London-dwelling Scot too :)

Tristan is frilly, although I waver a bit because it's kind of noble sounding at the same time.

Highlandgirl · 04/01/2011 20:04

I'm a Scot living London...! One day I will return Smile

I guess some people would think I'm quite posh..but on the grand scale of posh I'm right at the bottom bottom bottom end...!! DH is ex-army and quite grrrr so it's unlikely that we will have a mummy's boy type but who knows. I don't want a Mummy's boy at all, I want mud and Cowboys and Indians.

I like Hamish but on my brave list was Tristan, DH doesn't like Hamish and wants James. He's said Tristan is okay...!!! Stalemate.

Thank you LetThereBeRock xx

I think it is a bit frilly, I am half English half Scottish. The girl I knew called it was South African.

LetThereBeRock · 04/01/2011 19:48

And I'm a Scot.

said · 04/01/2011 19:47

Think it's frilly. I'm English. I quite like it but would never have dared use it if I'd really liked it. If that makes sense.

LetThereBeRock · 04/01/2011 19:44

It's a gorgeous name.

SlightlyTubbyHali · 04/01/2011 19:42

Now I feel rather guilty for suggesting it was frilly. Blush

Sorry.

I wonder if this is another of those Scot v English things. Maybe you should check where the people who think it is frilly are from. If we're all English and you live in Scotland you can ignore us!
