Fergus and Bridget

We're about to hit the Due Date and I think we've come up with a boys and girls names. We've gone a bit Irish for some reason, but keen to hear your thoughts....

Fergus for a boy.
Bridget for a girl.

How do they sound?

I knew a Fergus who was freckled, curly haired and a bit naughty and I think that name suited him perfectly.

I think saving your final decision til you see the child is always wise.

I also like Brigid / Brigit very much.

I am married to a Fergus - his mum used to live in Scotland. His name has inspired 3 friends to use it. Two little Fergs and one Gus.

Love it.

Hi, I am thinking Fergus is a really good name. It's actually Scottish not Irish and one that I am considering for my third little bundle of fun. I already have a Molly and Finn and am wondering if my boys being Finn and Fergus would be overkill?? Any advice appreciated.

Not sure about Bridget; a bit too conservative for me but a nice, steady choice none the less.

Good luck with the big decision.

My other boy potential names are Angus, Bobby or Murray.

It was a little baby boy that popped out. Doesn't look like a Fergus yet, but I guess we have a few weeks left!

Thanks Tebbles, we have plenty of Irish in the family and a few Bridgets dotted around. Would be nice to keep some Celt in there!

And interesting to hear they may become fashionable again or fit in with current names! Always been a trend setter hahahaha. Wink

I like Bridget but consider it very Irish.

Fergus is ok.

I dont consider either dated or old fashioned though. I think they would fit in very nicely with the current group of popular names.

Biddy/Bridie/Breda are all horrible. Bridget doesn't need a nickname.

Nor does Fergus for that matter.

Bridget may not be popular now, but my Spidey senses suggest it could be making a bit of a come back.

Biddy is the quintessential Irish nn for Brigid/ Bridget afaik, along with Bridie. I think that's where the term 'biddies' came from, due to the ubiquity of the name.

My sister is a Bridget, and she isn't called Bridie or Biddy (is Biddy really related to Bridget? I just think of old biddies/ladies).

I'm not so keen on Fergus - makes me think of Fungus the Bogeyman for some reason!

We have a Bridget dd1 and she is the only one we have ever met (apart from my great auntie)!
I think it is a lovely strong name!!!! I can't imagine a Bridget being a simpering girly girl - Smile
Honestly not sure on Fergus - just think of Deacon Blue??!!We have a Gabriel - any good?
No help with boys names as that was the only one we both liked.

I like Fergus but not sure about Bridget. It reminds me of Bridget Jones which I love but I think that it would annoy me not to be able to get over that connatation IYSWIM. Do like Bridie as a nm but not so keen on Biddy.

Fergus is great, keep saying this recently but is my bros name and he loves it (wants to call his son fergus if he has one!) and I love love the nn bridie so would def go for that.

I've never heard Fergus shortened.

I know they are completely separate names but I always think of Beatrice as the pretty version of Bridget. Softer and more elegant imo. Fergus is OK, though, although Fergie would be an unfortunate nn...

Bridget or Brigid is the name I really wanted to call DD3. I would have used the nn Biddy, and it would have suited her down to the ground. Still kicking myself...

No need to apologise for finding them old-fashioned, that has helped me! We prefer the old-fashioned names.

Thanks also for the alternative names spellings. Some food for thought.

I really like them both, especially Bridget, which could have cool nickname Bridie. I know a Fergus with the nickname Fuggy. I like the Ferg(h)al suggestion as well, but not Bridgin or the other variations - I'd say stick with Bridget, it's great.
