do you like Lois?

only ttc at the moment but interested in opinions.

i really struggle with girl's names, but somehow during a late night conversation DH and I discovered we actually both liked the above as a name for imaginary dc2 if a girl.

would be Lois Catherine (surname).

thanks in advance. have namechanged for this just in case of encountering my rl friends. :)

very stuck for potential boy names, that'll be another thread soon!

Lois is such an ugly name to me, I don't like it at all. Some popular names aren't used because they go out of fashion because they become so common, but Lois will always only be 10-a-generation because it's so unattractive.

It's a bit odd because I love Louis for a boy, and quite like Louise. But Lois just...no.

my nan was Lois pronounced "Loyce" rather than "Lo-is". It will be our little ones middle name if it turns out to be a girl

my nan used to say it was french & should be pronounced "Loy" but not sure if that's true

It would be the Low-iss pronunciation.

Just need to decide if I still like it enough.

Just found this while searching again. I don't have a little Lois as we had a boy. :)

However, I'm pg again and can't decide if I've gone off it.

Mainly because I can't think of a nickname I like for it. My older DC call each other little nicknames a lot which made me think of it.

I'm not keen on Lolo or Lolly or other variations I've seen, but I guess a pet name isn't essential.

Can you have Lois with a surname starting with 'Fr' ?? Or too much of a mouthful because of the 's' ending?

I seem to like names ending in 's' ... top choice for a boy is currently Marcus.

Lois is on a popularity curve - in that it's going up. There's about to be quite a few more girls about with this name. Well, there already are.

As for 'Loice' - never heard that pronunciation before.

Love it. Top of our list .Just realised this thread is from 2012 not 2013! Did you go for it?
We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl but it's one of only 2 girls names me & DH both agree on... One website said Lois means 'superior'. Not sure whether it would be wise to tell baby that part!

Loice sounds very Brummy...
It's a bit too American sounding for my taste - can't get away from the Superman connection.
Unusual though - I don't know any in RL. I think it's a name that looks pretty written down.

It's Greek. It's pronounced "low-iss", in accordance with Greek pronunciation rules. Popularized because the name is mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible.

Perhaps some people say "loice", but that's incorrect, or a reflection of a v heavy regional accent.

Just dredging this up as i am actually 5 months pregnant now and still quite like this. DH going off it a bit which is annoying as I can't think of any other names I like.

I don't know if DC will be a boy or a girl, we just picked one of each before DC1 was born and would like to do the same!

I dont like it because of the 'low' part. I think it 'depresses' the names for me- low, lowly. It makes me see a sad girl/woman. Sorry.

But OTOH I have never met one before so maybe my opinion would change if I met one in person.

I love it - desperately wanted it for my daughter but OH wasn't keen because there was (and still is) a make of denim jeans with the same name.

I think it's a name that is suitable for all ages - its easy to spell and is unusual without being totally off the wall.

My Mum is called Lois and it's definitely pronounced Luhwiss. She does occasionally get mistakenly called Lewis or Louise but mostly people have heard of it (the superman connection helps). So you would have an unusual name but not one that stumped everyone. And for what it's worth my mother is a wonderful woman!
