do you like Lois?

only ttc at the moment but interested in opinions.

i really struggle with girl's names, but somehow during a late night conversation DH and I discovered we actually both liked the above as a name for imaginary dc2 if a girl.

would be Lois Catherine (surname).

thanks in advance. have namechanged for this just in case of encountering my rl friends. :)

very stuck for potential boy names, that'll be another thread soon!

I know one 3 yo Lois but am not keen personally, Eloise is so much nicer IMO!

Most of the people I know pronounce it Loice (South Wales) but I prefer it Lowiss (pronounced, not spelt like that, obviously!).

I like it. I like girls names that are feminine without being what in my head are fussy/frilly names.

I LOVE it! Currently 5 months pregnant and desperately trying to convince DP he loves Lois too! Ours would be Lois Victoria.

Love Catherine (for obvious reasons)

I have a 17 month old Lois. Know a couple of teenage ones.

It's a good old fashioned name that's not mega popular (yet!) and suited our little girl more than anything else we had on the possibles list.

As previous poster said, Lois is of Greek origin. It's in the New Testament. It means 'better' or 'more desirable'. Original pronounciation = Low-is.

It's not related to Louis or Louise. They are versions of a Germanic name, Ludwig.

I love the name. I think that it's a good thing that tons of other kids will not have the name. It is also the name of my favourite cousin who is an incredible woman. I don't think that she has ever had trouble with her name.

I love Lois (as lowiss). Think its pretty and unusual without being too 'look at me' unusual.

Another one living in north wales here and I've taught a few little girls called Lois, pronounced Loyce. I actually prefer it to Low-iss... But I don't dislike Low-iss either. And I think there are worse role models than Lois lane Grin

I love it but 'Loice' is definitely Welsh - that's sadly the reason I couldn't use the name, as that would be the accepted pronunciation where we live - 'Low-iss' is the pronunciation I like but here she would spend her lifecorrecting people.

I've always loved my name. I never met another one growing up so had a fair few spelling / pronunciation issues to correct, but it's far more popular now so that shouldn't be a problem. I got nicknamed Lo or Lowly if anything but it's short enough not to need a nickname really.

Donna someone up the thread gave me an origin for it, I don't think it was French. There was done discussion that the Loyce version was used in Wales.

bowler I'm not going to put my boys names on cos it would out me, sorry. :) they are both not made up but not popular names IYSWIM. DS1 is in top 300 DS2 just inside top 100
