Hi there

Here are my initial thoughts for names for boys and girls, please let me know what you think! I'm less than 2 months PG so still plenty of time to think about it.

Isaac
Joseph
Innes
Thomas
Marley
Austin
Jesse

Lily
Isis
Lydia
Jessie
Alice
Agnes
Katherine
Madeleine
Maria

For the girls' names (for both actually) I would be really keen for a nature-inspired name (hence Lily, though I know it is very very popular) but can't think of many good ones. I like Rowan, but am looking for a first name that will go with the middle name Elliot. Elliot will be the middle name for either a girl or a boy.

Cheers!

Congratulations on your PG seeyou

Isaac - was very popular a few years ago. Its ok though.
Joseph - ok
Innes - ok
Thomas - popular but like very much.
Marley - did you say you were having a baby or a dog Grin
Austin - Like but brace yourself for the Powers jokes.
Jesse - Like but a very brave choice.

Lily - like but one MNer worked out that if you add up all the spellings it was actually the most popular girls name last year.
Isis - not keen.
Lydia - Not keen again sorry.
Jessie - sounds more like a nn.
Alice - like.
Agnes - Love
Katherine - classic and nice.
Madeleine - a bit overdone for me.
Maria - I just met a girl called....

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 03/01/2011 11:01

Many thanks JJJ glad I got one you loved! Any thoughts on alternative nature names?

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/01/2011 11:08

Sorrell
Heather
Jasmine, but is very popular.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/01/2011 11:09

Anyway, don't worry about what I say, its not my baby and if you knew the names of my DC you might think they were terrible Grin

Go with the name you both love Smile

Innes - more of a surname to me.
Thomas - OK
Marley - Not sure - also know a wee baby girl called this!

Jesse - Like

Lily - OK
Isis - Don't like.
Lydia - OK
Jessie - nickname to me too.
Alice - Like

Katherine - Like
Madeleine - Don't like
Maria - Really like this one :)

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 03/01/2011 11:27

Thanks all! Yes I should have made clear re Jessie - it would be Jessica on the birth certificate, nickname Jessie. Maria is one of my favourites on the list too - but I have an aunt called Maria and her children haven't had children yet, so wouldn't want to steal it from them.

Isaac - like
Joseph - like
Innes - don't like, makes me think of a rugby-playing lawyer (though that would obviously be a good thing for some!)
Thomas - nice
Marley - Scrooge's business partner
Austin - don't like
Jesse - a lot of teasing potential, although it has a nice sound.

Lily - super popular, for good reason as it is nice.
Isis - not keen
Lydia - love, DP doesn't Sad Someone use it!
Jessie - Nice with Jessica as full name
Alice - very pretty
Agnes - like this, though I know many who don't
Katherine - may become very popular this year
Madeleine - OK
Maria - OK

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 03/01/2011 11:42

Cheers falling, yes I know what you mean re Innes, I like it because I knew a nice Innes and I like the Scottish connection (I'm Scottish) but it does remind me a bit of the Billy Connolly sketch re surnames as posh first names in Scotland.

OP posts:
fallingandlaughing · 03/01/2011 11:49

I was wondering if you are Scottish (I am too). How about Alexander or Andrew for a Scottishy name? ALthough you have nice ones already.

fallingandlaughing · 03/01/2011 11:50

Do you live in Scotland? My Dad kind of ruined Lydia for me by making a weird Scottish pun out of it.

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 03/01/2011 12:01

No, I live in New Zealand now - would love to know what the Lydia pun was though! Thanks for the suggestions, I knew a truly awful Sandy so Alexander is out for me, but I like Andrew. I was considering Murdo as well but again it sounds a bit posh and maybe too close to Murdoch.

OP posts:
fallingandlaughing · 03/01/2011 12:16

He just says it is the same as "Lid ae a" i.e. Lid of a... then says words like jamjar, teapot. This would not occur to anyone in NZ. Probably not that many people in Scotland, but I can't get it out of my mind Confused DP not that keen anyway and we have another girl's name we like now.

If you are looking for Scottish inspiration this website lists all names given in Scotland in 2010: www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/theme/vital-events/births/popular-names/2010/detailed-tables.html

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 03/01/2011 12:25

Cool thanks falling, will check it out. "Lid ae a" sounds like exactly the kind of pun my step-dad used to make, he had a really bad joke about shoes made in Taiwan (one lace up, one buckled)!

OP posts:
jaggythistle · 03/01/2011 12:29

Grin at 'lid ae a jam jar'! I get it, very Dad humour :)

Of the boys like Issac best and the girls Maria.

Lily is overused.

tebbles · 03/01/2011 14:38

I like Isaac, Joseph, Thomas and Jesse.

Innes and Marley are too feminine IMO.

Austin is Ok.

I like Lily, Lydia, Alice, Jessie, Alice, Katherine, Agnes.

I dont really like Madeline as I find it overused and also the fact that most people, regardless of spelling, say Mad-uh-lyn. I preferred the different spellings and other pronouciations that used to exist before it before very popular. The other versions that rhyme with rain and nine.

I dont really like Isis or Maria.

Other nature names: Iris, Willow, Marina??

Nightstar · 03/01/2011 17:33

Innes - and Gunn, they make beer, really dont!

Austin - Original yet Old fashioned, good name

Isis - Gorgeous, but better as a middle name

Lydia - Just lovely

Alice - Wonderful!

Agnes - Certainly not

Madeleine - The best, I would suggest Madeleine Isis Lydia ......

I like the others, but they dont stand out

Nightstar · 03/01/2011 17:33

Oh, and use Marley for a girl, not a boy

Raahh · 03/01/2011 18:49

I love Isaac- was the only name DH and I could agree on for a boy (but dc3 is a girl)- nick name Ike.
Also LOVE Lydia- but with our surname was a bit show girl ( think Lydia La Rue, but not that).

Alice and Joseph are also great.

BUT Elliot (imo)is a BOYS name...and ds's name. Great choice, by the way!

BelligerentGhoul · 03/01/2011 18:57

Isaac - yes
Joseph - yes
Innes -not sure
Thomas - yes
Marley -no
Austin - really no, sorry
Jesse - no

Lily - nice
Isis - no
Lydia - v nice
Jessie - cowgirl
Alice - lovely
Agnes - bit hard
Katherine - nice
Madeleine - nice
Maria - ok

Boy nature names that I like - Rowan (dd2 would have been this if ds), Dale

Girl nature names I like - Daisy, Violet, Wren, Clover, Posey or Posy

Mrsmackie · 03/01/2011 19:28

I have an Isaac (3 week old) and an Alice (2 yrs) so they are obviously my faves!

Nightstar · 03/01/2011 19:31

Forrest

Fern

River

SeeyouontheothersideRay · 04/01/2011 03:46

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! Elliot is my middle name and a family surname for me, so our idea with that is for the baby (and prob any future babies) to have my middle name and my OH's surname, as they go together well. I love Forrest but OH's surname begins with F so might be a bit of a mouthful.

Also like Rowan, though it would result in initials REF.
So few takers for Isis! I guess it is a bit pretentious but I like its power! Not sure how I would feel about being called it though, so I suppose that should rule it out.
So far I'm leaning towards Alice, Lydia, Isaac and Joseph.
