Jude

What do people think of Jude for a boy?
My plus points: begins with a J, which I like, but not as popular as Joshua, Jacob etc.
I like that it has one syllable, feels quite 'strong'.
Negatives: Jude Law. 'Hey Jude'. Could be girly? (As in short for Judith?)
Am wavering...

Its a lovely name which for me is ruined every time the actor Jude Law appears or is heard on screen doing his "I'm not posh really, I grew up in a surrey council estate" fake accent and being smug and deeply unattractive (in my opinion).

tebbles · 01/01/2011 18:21

I like it too. Have not met any either.

Janus · 01/01/2011 12:40

I love Jude, I really wanted it as one of our boy's names but, for some reason, my husband really dislikes Jude Law and won't hear of it!! I don't have many boy's names I like either so it's really difficult.
I think it's a strong name, slightly cool (if you know what I mean) and seems like they would be fun too. Good mix!

Rhubarbgarden · 01/01/2011 09:17

I love Jude. On my list for a future ds. Bit offputting that it's racing up the name charts though.

Sorry, thanks ShowOfHands, wasn't sure if your niece was Jude as her name, or if was a nickname iyswim. All very helpful! Grin.

Like I say my niece is called Jude and my brother says he's met two other female Judes under 3 since having her.

cece · 30/12/2010 22:07

I know some adult Judiths and a 6 year old Judy.

OnEdge · 30/12/2010 20:11

My son was Jude for two hours, but we changed it back to an original choice, but I really love it.

LetThereBeRock · 30/12/2010 20:10

I really don't like it.

sofaaddict · 30/12/2010 18:55

Do people know many Jude girls? Judith seems to have gone out of favour, is it short for any other girls names?

I love it

cece · 30/12/2010 18:47

I think Jude is a lovely name for GIRL but I am always a bit Hmm when I see it used for a boy. Just doesn't seem manly enough to me.

pacinofan · 30/12/2010 18:45

My dh has Jude as middle name, on account of catholic upbring. Saint Jude is the patron saint of despertate cases and lost causes. As a child he hated his middle name, but funnily enough quite likes it now in his adult years. If we had had boys, our ds would have had Jude as his middle name also.

Should add, although not religeous, I prayed to St Jude when my mum became very ill 8 years ago and was in intensive care. We were told she had hours to live, I went to a church and sat with my prayer card to St Jude (dates back to the 1940s) and prayed and prayed. Against all the odds, she lived, and for that I will always hold St Jude close to my heart.

Lovely name, go for it!

yessirnosir · 30/12/2010 10:23

I have a 6 year old Jude, he is one of two in his class and went to a party and there was another one as well. I think it may be a local thing, there are definitely loads of them, knew of two others at playgroup. Don't want to completely out myself, but there is a famous local Jude, so maybe that's it.

However, mine was named for his grandma and I still love his name, of my 3 kids names it's probably the most popular name (round here anyway) but my favourite. Though I don't like that he now signs things even to his family with his surname initial! Oh and we were going to call dd1 Jude, but glad we decided to save it for the boy.

SleepWhenImDead · 30/12/2010 08:51

Love it. Know one (baby) who they refer to as The Dude or Doodles

purepurple · 30/12/2010 08:32

I love it. I know only one Jude, he is 3.

sofaaddict · 30/12/2010 08:21

Thanks all! Much more positive than I thought you would all be!

I have a Jude aged 1 and love it. He gets called Judy by close family (but please don't let that put you off!). I have yet to meet another Jude.

We sing 'hey Jude' to him and he rewards us with a big smile and little dance!

Go for it!

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:42

Graph here showing how quickly it's leapt up in popularity over the last few years.

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:39

Baby names stats here

It is 98 and climbed 5 places.

Lucas was the biggest climber (another relative). I knew one of my relatives had the highest climbing name.

Anyway, the trend shows it's on the up!

MerryMarigold · 29/12/2010 22:26

sofa, you can google I think the Times top 100 names.

From recollection it is now number 98 and jumped from way outside the top 100.

mamatomany · 29/12/2010 22:19

Love it

sofaaddict · 29/12/2010 22:18

Hi ShowofHands where can you find that information from? Thank you!

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:17

It's still only just in the top 100 though iirc but I think the number of places it jumped is quite significant in judging it as an up and comer.

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:16

I think it was the biggest climber in the name charts last year. I know 4 baby Judes. 3 boys and my niece.

It's nice though.
