Want to call him Max - love the name so much.
Am thinking of putting Maxwell on the birth certificate - or should I just stick at plain Max.

What do you think?

Don't love Maxwell, just prefer it to Maximilian (which is silly) and worry that putting a shortened form of a name on the birth certificate is a bit chavvy.

Is this fair enough or terribly snobbish and old fashioned?

Max on it's own is fine. It's a shortened form not just a nickname like Daz or something and not cutesy like Alfie. I had a simelar dilema and just used the short form. Not regretted it yet. I have a long version of a name which is annoying as nobody ever uses the long version except the doctors etc.

I know two Max s who are just Max ,great name.Maxwell sounds like coffee.

I love Maximilian as from 'Rebecca'.

Love Maxim as an affectionate nn.

Think just Max is ok but a little bit along the lines of 'Ace' or 'Buzz'. Sorry!

Normally I agree about putting the long name on the birth certificate, but I think Max easily stands alone.

And I don't really like any of the long versions.

Firawla · 24/12/2010 18:31

Max is fine as a name in its own right, I don't think it has to be short for anything really?

IAmReallyFabNow · 24/12/2010 17:22

If you want to call him Max, call him Max. I don't know why people think having the option of a longer name when an adult makes any difference. And if you think a name is chavvy I think that says more about you tbh.

Secretwishescometrue · 24/12/2010 17:19

I think its a perfectly nice name on its own I wouldn't be overly keen on Maxwell would prefer Maximus or Maxim is quite cool

The Max I know is just Max on his birth certificate. I think its a perfectly ok name in its own right. Great name by the way.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 24/12/2010 14:34

I know a Maximus

tammytoby · 24/12/2010 14:21

I'd always choose the long version of a name for the birth certificate as it gives more options later in life. I'm not keen on Maxwell. What about Maxim or Maximus if you don't like Maximilian.

stnikkilarse1978 · 24/12/2010 14:21

I wanted to call my DS Max and would have just called him that. In the end we went for Ben and he is just Ben not Benjamin.

I also think Maximilian is a bit weird.

othersideofchannel · 24/12/2010 14:17

My choice would be Maximilian - elegant, classic and international. Max would be too nicknamey for me personally. I'd prefer to give him a choice.

Maxwell reminds me of coffee..
