Case in point mypropertea

Annelise is probably pronounced Ann-uh-lees-uh. It sounds like Annaleeza to English ears but it really isn't that at all.

kitchenunit · 20/06/2016 16:57

Bear in mind anything which sounds like an "a" ending to our ears is very probably actually an "e" and to German ears often sounds like a rather unattractive "uh".

So for instance "Charlotte" probably sounds to English ears like "charlotta " but to German ears like "charlott-uh"

A small point and irrelevant if you're in the uk, but it affected the names that we were happy to go with.

Also think about difference in pronunciation generally. I didn't want to DC to have something pronounced differently in each language - confusing when you're not sure whether to introduce yourself as English "Caroline" or "Caro-leenuh"

Anneliese (said Annalisa)

Hi, my nan is German and I'm proud of my German roots so want German names for my kids but names that work in English also.
I named my son Konrad and am pregnant again, if it's a girl I'm having Freyja or Heidi, or another boy I'm thinking Gerard...
There is also Karl, Kurt, Greta, Maria.....

JiltedJohnsJulie · 28/12/2010 14:39

Nightstar there is one in DS school and it does seem to suit him.

Think if you choose a name like that you are going to have to prepare yourself for a few raised eyebrows and the odd Shock look.

sadiesadiemarriedlady · 28/12/2010 14:33

Adelaide

Lieselotte I've heard in Germany (my DH is German). I love the name, especially the nn Lilo. Filine I've not heard of but it sounds lovely. How is it pronounced - Fill-ee-nuh?

anamaria22 · 27/12/2010 20:09

Really, am surprised at that, but maybe Lieselotte is gaining popularity along the granny chic theme. But I would be really surprised if Gretchen was in Germany..?

oldandgreynow · 27/12/2010 18:01

Yes Lieselotte is in Germany

mathanxiety · 27/12/2010 17:23

Lieselotte is somewhere in the 400s in LittleElf's list so there are a few.

anamaria22 · 27/12/2010 15:40

I bet Gretchen and Lieselotte are NOT growing up in Germany...are they?

oldandgreynow · 27/12/2010 12:12

I know a little Gretchen- which I presume is German and I have a German friend with a little girl called Lieselotte (probably not spelt like that)
