Classical or boring?

It's a lovely name and overdue a revival.

NadiaWadia · 28/12/2010 00:50

Clare is traditionally the British spelling. Claire is the French version, which became popular in the 60s and 70s along with names like Michelle, Louise, Julie, etc.

Slightly prefer Clare myself. Lovely name, anyway.

MangoTango · 27/12/2010 15:26

Cokefan I have a 6 year old Clare. Nice to meet someone else with a child with the same name as it so rarely happens! I've always loved it, but yes she is the only one in the school.

oldandgreynow · 27/12/2010 12:15

A teacher friend told me 'Clare' tends to be more classy than 'Claire'

muminthemiddle · 27/12/2010 12:07

I love it. Would go with the "I" spelling though.x

dietcokesholidaysarecoming · 23/12/2010 22:11

Know lots if claires and one Clare. Depends if you want her to be forever spelling it.

sadiesadiemarriedlady · 23/12/2010 20:37

Beautiful, prefer it without the i as you have written it. Classical beautiful name.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/12/2010 20:35

Like it without the I too. Also like Clara, Clarissa and Clarabel.

It's great as long as you don't live in the northwest, when it becomes Clurrr.

LittleYellowTeapot · 22/12/2010 21:07

It could be a grower.
I always thought of it as being a bit frumpy but I think it's uite pretty actually. I prefer it with an 'i' though.

LofticusBofticus · 22/12/2010 21:06

I think its a fabby name

mandy1978 · 22/12/2010 21:02

i love the name, there were 4 in my class but it is a classic pretty name and pretty rare today! x

CokeFan · 22/12/2010 19:42

My 2yo DD's a Claire. We keep getting it spelled Clare (or in the case of the CTF people, Calire Hmm). I reckon she's going to be the only one at school with the name (as I was with my name - not uncommon but more of a 60s than a 70s name).

Our surname isn't common but is longish and has Rs and Ls in it so lots of names just didn't "go" with it. We needed something short so Claire was our first choice (Amy was second choice).

readysalted · 22/12/2010 19:27

ime a clare always bothers me when people give me an i personally i love my name hardly any in my school only one other ive thanked my mum and dad for calling me clare could of been worse back end of the sixtiesXmas Grin

FessaEst · 22/12/2010 19:26

I love it, fancied it for DD but was an ex of Dh's name so no go.

I like it as Clare.

Strange to think it would be a really unusual name at school etc, compared to our day when there were 5 in each class!

GrizzlyMacDuff · 22/12/2010 19:24

needs an 'i' in it, or else it looks wrong imo. But if you have irish connections, probably without the 'i' will be fine.

It is nice enough but a bit dated, and there are millions of them in my generation.

AnnOnimous · 22/12/2010 19:20

I like it with the i, so Claire, twas the name I wished I had as a child.

ValiumShimmer · 22/12/2010 19:00

Classic I guess, but ther are just so many of them and they are 'our' generation.. I mean if you have a Claire and an Isabel coming to play group, you expect the Claire to be the Mum and the Isabel to be the child.

I think it needs to rest for another ten years. But on the plus side, she would be the only one, and does it really matter if a bunch of women 30-40 years older than you don't find your name terribly exciting.

Pretty name - really like it (and she will have her own song too by Gilbert O'Sullivan).

CosmicClairey · 22/12/2010 18:45

I'm a Claire and I love it but I didn't when I was younger!! My mum didn't want to have the I in it but my dad registered me and put it in, telling my mum he HAD to have it in as I am the apple of his eye!! haha, he tells my mum absolutely ANYTHING and no doubt made it up on the way home!!! x

lollyheart · 22/12/2010 18:44

I'm a clare too Smile

I do like it and think it is due a come back.

twirlymum · 22/12/2010 18:37

I always get the 'i' put in too. I was named after a place in Ireland, where my grandmother came from.

SecretSlattern · 22/12/2010 18:29

I don't get the added i in my name, but people do tend to spell it Clair (which I hate)
