What do you think of when you hear Niall?

I can't decide if i love it or not.

I think it's Irish, which is nice, and pronounced Nile rather than Neil, which would be the English version, which i'm not fond of.

Thoughts?

Quinn the footballer. Nice name. It sounds like you'll be safe from people calling him Neil if you stay out of Scotland.

space2010 · 21/02/2011 22:52

My son is named Niall, he is 6, he likes his name and we continue to love it. I was at a conference and a strong, handsome, Irish man gave a fantastic speech about brain injuries and i remember thinking, if I had a son that is what I shall call him. I also have irish parents, so I probably found some comfort in it. It is also a very strong name I feel. Love it!!

FranSanDisco · 10/02/2011 16:24

Frasier's brother was Nyles - not sure is I spelt it right but it has an S on the end. I remember a Niall from school and ds has a friend called Nyles who is Irish.

iskra · 10/02/2011 16:19

I've probably already posted to this thread, btu I think of Niall Quinn (Man City hero of my youth) & I love it.

muminthesun · 10/02/2011 16:14

Only joking,Isnt it funny how you can never like a name if someone your not keen on has that name.

Anyway dont think ds will end up ugly or unmarried, but cant take any credit as he looks nothing like me!

HappyHugs · 10/02/2011 16:00

Love it. Know quite a few young children here (N Ireland)with the name so it's obviously increasing in popularity. I think it's a very solid man's name (all the grown up me I know with that name are quite middle class and successful for some reason!)

TooImmature2BMum · 10/02/2011 15:17

My uncle! Pronounced Neil, not Nile, though.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 10/02/2011 15:16

I'm really sorry for that comment, I should clarify that I know two Nialls who fit that description!

muminthesun · 10/02/2011 13:59

Loopyloops,There's no hope for ds thenSmile

KenDoddsDadsDog · 10/02/2011 07:06

Eh? It's not a made up spelling.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 09/02/2011 21:58

Sorry but:

To me, it sounds like an ugly, geeky man in his 40s (no wife or girlfriend) whose parents weren't sure how to spell the name they chose.

RueLaChesty · 09/02/2011 21:55

I know two but both are pronounced Neil (we're in Scotland). Before meeting them I would have pronounced it Nye-al.

I love the way it looks written down. :)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 09/02/2011 20:57

Hello londonmackem! Shame Darren Bent has scored tonight Angry

londonmackem · 09/02/2011 20:54

I think it is lovely but then maybe I am just in a good mood at seeing all the Sunderland references - hello all!
I have only met nice Nialls and would pronounce it Nile

daimbardiva · 09/02/2011 20:49

It's the gaelic spelling of Neil - usually pronounced the same here in Scotland too.

mmmitsdelicious · 09/02/2011 10:13

I would pronounce Niall, Nile.
All the Niall's I have met are in Ireland and pronounce it Nile not Neil.

muminthesun · 09/02/2011 10:10

Our ds is Niall,we love it.People do somtimes say Neil though instead of Nile, which may annoy him when he's older.

QuestionNumber · 09/02/2011 10:02

I like it, although I'd pronounce it Neil.

glovesoflove · 09/02/2011 09:51

My wee cousin (he's about 16 now and roughly twice my height but still), who is lovely!

MrsGruffalo · 09/02/2011 09:49

My little brother is a Niall.... He was a cute kid, and is now a very clever and very cool teenager. I love it, lovely name!

Panzee · 28/12/2010 02:26

Niall Quinn (football, Ny-all) or Niall MacKenzie, (GP/Superbikes, Neil). I like it.

ShoshanaBlue · 28/12/2010 02:23

City til I die.

purepurple · 27/12/2010 17:30

Niall Quinn and his disco pants, obviously.

"Niall Quinn's discopants are the best, They go up from his arse to his chest... They are better than Adam and the Ant's. Niall Quinn's Disco pants..."
SummerRain · 27/12/2010 17:27

My first boyfriend was a Niall as is a little lad I know who'll be in school with ds2.

I quite like it, but then i live in the west of ireland where it's a commonly used name

mathanxiety · 27/12/2010 17:24

I think that was Niles, not Nialls.
