It may be my hormones, but what do you think of Ferris (as in Ferris Bueller's Day Off) for a boy

Thank you! It is soooo tricky, especially when you have to agree and compromise with DP and you cant quite trust your judgement due to being hormonal!

I like them all, apart from Rocco.

Molly, Milo, Summer all probably more popular than you'd expect.

I really like Ferris, Jacob, Jasper, Molly and Summer from your list.

itsawonderfuldarleneconnorlife · 21/12/2010 19:48

Ferris - Wheel, but ok if a bit geeky
Ellis- makes me think of a farmer, not v sophisticated
Milo- tweenies or that DJ but I like it
Rocco no, no, please dont copy Ms Ciccone
Jacob- nn jake is a bit chav
Jasper- Carrott?, but quite cool

Matilda- I'd think you were expecting her to be a child prodigy
Kitty- only for a cat
Nell- rhymes with so much could be used to bully
Summer - common, too american
Molly- historically didnt this mean maid?, bit fluffy and girly for my liking

I'd say all these names are very 'of the moment' and wont date well.

ballstoit · 21/12/2010 18:40

Milo is a character in a kids TV programme (Tweenies), so I wouldnt go for that either. How about Josiah? Can be shortened easily but a it more unusual.

ballstoit · 21/12/2010 18:39

If you dont want too popular, cross out Molly, Matilda and Summer. Several in DC's school and in toddler groups here.

I like Nell though, very pretty.

Not such a fan of Kitty, too animally for me!

NarcolepsyQueen · 21/12/2010 18:37

Oops - I lied about Milo - there were 307 of them registered in England and Wales in 2009

OP posts:
NarcolepsyQueen · 21/12/2010 18:30

OOhh - much more promising

minipie I looked at the national statistics for names registered in 2009 and there werent any Milos listed - do you think there has been a flux this year? Interestingly Ferris was 4527!!

Nell seems to have gone down well :-)

Any other ideas?

My 6.5 year old is Amelie, if that helps?

There are loads of Ellis boys around here. I love Jacob and Jasper.

I love all your girls names, apart from Summer. I love Nell.

BelligerentYhoULE · 21/12/2010 18:11

Do you mean Robert Ferrars/Edward Ferrars, Valium? Or have I forgotten somebody?

Nightstar · 21/12/2010 18:07

Matilda - Really lovely, and i like both Matty or Tilly as nicknames

Kitty - It's nice

Nell - This could be a real winner. Maybe short for Fenella?

Summer - chav

Molly - it's nice

Sorry, just my humble opinions

ValiumShimmer · 21/12/2010 18:07

ps, I think John is on the rise again. Haven't heard of any Janes, but lately I've been noticing a number of Johns. One in the health section of paper this morning, and my friend has one... I think people are using it as an alternative to Jack. And compared to Jack it is extremely unusual.

ValiumShimmer · 21/12/2010 18:05

It also reminds me Jane Austen's Robert Ferris so it's not totally Beuller-specific. He was not one her heroes mind you.

Nightstar · 21/12/2010 18:05

Ellis - sounds like a surname
Milo - wimpy
Rocco - pet dog next door
Jacob - will be in top three next year
Jasper - very cool, love it

Yes, Max, Oscar and Noah all very popular, but you have to choose a name you like even if it will be.

Personally I quite liked Ferris, it's different and their generation wont know the film, but dont think you will use it after public opinion, maybe something similar?

minipie · 21/12/2010 18:04

Ferris - I wouldn't. How about Felix?

of your list, I like Milo and Jacob but there will be a few others around.

of your girls list, I really like Nell and Kitty. Summer is pretty. Molly and Matilda I'm not so keen on.

NarcolepsyQueen · 21/12/2010 18:00

Ok - how about my girls names:

Matilda
Kitty
Nell
Summer
Molly

Thoughts?

Thank you for your help and suggestions! I also like Max Oscar and Noah - but arent they really popular now? I know what you mean about Jane and John cece - but I just cant bring myself to do it!

OP posts:
cece · 21/12/2010 16:09

I had the same remit as you for my first. I too work in education.

So DD arrived and we named her what we thought would be a rare name.

It is now pretty popular and therefore there are at least 5 others I know of locally.... (all younger Wink)

So by the time I got to DC3 I just went for a name we liked. It is pretty popular and common but tbh I don't mind anymore Grin

Having said that if you want unusual but not weird then I would go for John or Jane.

BelligerentYhoULE · 21/12/2010 16:04

Love Ellis.

Do you want more suggestions?

Elias is also lovely; also Rowan (much nicer than Rocco imho).

AnnOnimous · 21/12/2010 16:01

Jasper and Jacob - yes

Ferris - no

scurryfunge · 21/12/2010 16:00

Like Jasper, though I think it is fairly popular.

AllieW · 21/12/2010 15:59

Milo and Jacob are my favourites of your list.

NarcolepsyQueen · 21/12/2010 15:58

Yo be fair - i LOVE the film!

OP posts:
NarcolepsyQueen · 21/12/2010 15:58

I want unusual, without being weird; I work in education so have lots of name associations. I also dont want the bean to be one of 5 in its class (we dont know the gender) with the same name. Other ideas:

Ellis
Milo
Rocco
Jacob
Jasper

Further thoughts please!

PuppyMonkey · 21/12/2010 15:58

If you like the film, you could always go for Cameron.

Althoug that might have other connotations these days too. Grin

PuppyMonkey · 21/12/2010 15:57

If you save Ferris, you lose a testicle.
