Very upset

More or less since I got pregnant my husband and I have been decided on George for a boy. We haven't told anyone as think it adds to the surprise at the end. I know it's hardly original but I thought it was unlikely to be used by people we know before bub is born. No such luck. My best friend's sister has used it and although she's not part of my everyday life my circle of friends will all be aware of the fact that our George came second. I feel like a seed of doubt has been planted and that I'll have to explain again and again that we had the name picked out from the beginning. I know this is a relatively ridiculous thing to get upset about but for us it's always been George for a boy and now it just doesn't feel special. Hope I don't come across as a total moron - I really do have more important things to be worried about - it's just it's really upset me and I'm not sure what to do. Any advice appreciated.

George is lovely.

It doesnt matter, people may make the connection for the first week, but then that's it.

I had a friend who had chosen Florence, but then a fortnight before her daughter came along, David Cameron's did. She changed the name, as she didnt want the association, and is now regretting her change of mind.

CharlieBoo · 21/12/2010 13:51

Good for you... I really like George fwiw.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2010 06:55

Glad you've calmed down Cupcake. Glad that you've stuck with George too.

Just tell anyone who asks that it's after George Bush. And say no more about it.

cupcakebakerer · 20/12/2010 21:06

Right girls - I have calmed down now. What a daft thing to get so upset about - especially to the point of sobbing!! Thank you all so much for your advice, George it is. We just can't imagine our little boy being called anything else now.

TBH it will be fine. Its a common name. Its not like you have both chosen a name thats not even in the top 1000

Nightstar · 20/12/2010 16:35

I think you shouldnt trust your feelings right now. Even though you feel it really strongly i think you have to acknowledge that hormones are making everything ten times bigger than it would be to you normally.

Instead trust your husbands judgement. What does he think about all this? Does he still want to use it or is he coming up with other suggestions?

cece · 19/12/2010 23:12

Just carry on and use it. Smile as you announce it and say isn't he lovely!

But having said that I didn't use any of the names that we had decided on whilst pg. In the end we always ended up using a name from the reserve list.

herhonesty · 19/12/2010 15:43

just use it. cant have been the first george and certainly wont be the last george you'll come across.

SmokinSanta · 19/12/2010 10:25

Use George.

I have a George. One of my circle of friends has a George 2 years younger too (only 7 of us, so small circle of friends!) and my best friends sister has a George 3 years younger.

Really not a big deal. Its a popular (and rightly so!!) name. Its your choice. Use it!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/12/2010 10:17

We have a George, he's fab obviously. Use the name if you love it. FWIW there is only one other in his school and we've only ever met 2 others.

NinkyNonker · 18/12/2010 20:08

It's a great name, on my list for if a boy comes along in the future!

SunOverStars · 18/12/2010 19:39

Agree that George is extremely popular, I work with under-5's in private households (nanny/maternity nurse) and know 8 under 3!!!

I totally understand where you're coming from as we were in love with the name Noah for any boy we might have. Got pregnant, and Noah's started springing up everywhere. Definitely took the shine off and about halfway through the pregnancy when yet ANOTHER Noah was announced, I decided it wasn't an option anymore. Had DP spouting everything 'But he will be our Noah', etc etc etc - what everyone is saying to you about George, but to be honest, it was gone for me. Lost the specialness.

However, if you really want a classic boys' name then you musn't be too bothered about popularity. I really was and ALWAYS wanted a child with an unusual but lovely name. So we vetoed Noah.

fanjolina · 18/12/2010 19:27

the shine will be your new baby, not its name

JojoMags · 18/12/2010 19:08

Wont matter two figs once the baby is born. Your George will be special because he's yours.

MissFit · 18/12/2010 16:54

It's your hormones. I remember getting ridiculously upset at an episode of Doctor Who (of all things) and had to go and sit on the stairs in the hall to calm myself down Blush

George is lovely BTW.

sadiesadiemarriedlady · 18/12/2010 16:33

Call your baby George. If you want to call your baby George, it doesn't matter one jot who else is called George. Your son won't constantly live his life thinking 'oh, so and so was named George before me' blah blah blah, he will just be happy he has a good strong name.

KAEKAE · 18/12/2010 16:27

George is SO popular, my sister had one last year! And her friends son is named it but she still used it because she liked it! Just use it, you'll regret it perhaps if you don't! At the end of the day no one except you and your DH really cares what you decide to call your baby!! It's the same as when people decide not to tell others the sex of their baby...like anyone really cares!!

mathanxiety · 13/12/2010 06:14

I managed to unwittingly give DD3 one of the most enduringly popular names of the last 15 years, but she has never lost her 'shine' and neither has her name -- she is my [Littlemisspopularname] and nothing else matters.

nooka · 13/12/2010 00:53

I think if you go with a classic traditional boys name it is pretty much inevitable that if you know a fair few people having babies one of them might use it. I can totally understand being upset about it, but really your family and friends are not going to make any association. You won't have to be explaining again and again, or at least any more than you usually explain why you picked the name (people will ask just because they will be interested).

However if you want a special name you will need to pick something more unusual or accept that George is special not only to you, but to lots of other families too.

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 13/12/2010 00:49

Adding Isaac to the list.

Love George though and when he's born yours will be the special George and you won't give the other another thought :).

CaptainNancy · 12/12/2010 21:51

rofl- my comment was to having a DD named electra actually- what an unfortunate x-post.

sparkleshine · 12/12/2010 20:53

DP has a very good friend called Thomas. Didn't put us off calling our DS it.
It doesn't cause confusion at all and tbh although the friend jokes about how we named our son after him ( rolls eyes emoticon) and states how he's very flattered, nobody cares.
