Clement (nn Clem)

Ok, so I've only just had our 2nd child (Arthur Henry) and I'm already pondering names for a third (don't worry we're thinking a 3 year gap is sensible).

Anyhow, I was thinking about slightly more unusual names and thought of this one. I do know a Clement who is only slightly older than me. I really like Clem as a nn which is what the child would be known as, I think (all supposing DH were to agree). What do folk think?

My brother is Clem (not short for anything but confusingly named after Clement Atlee).

You can I believe be 'fair clemmed' with cold, probably in one of the Northern counties...

Iwantscallops · 02/01/2011 20:47

Loola - my DH has refered to them as his 'Clems' in the past! Just another Geordie saying maybe!

Like Clement though.

Amapoleon · 02/01/2011 15:42

My first crush was called Clem.

tebbles · 02/01/2011 15:36

I don't like it at all. Arthur Henry is much nicer.

Clementine is quite nice, although the pronounciation may be an issue. Is it 'Clement-een' or 'Clement - ine' (like nine)

JojoMags · 02/01/2011 15:27

Like it, but think of Clem / Clemmie as a girls name - short for Clementine.

Nightstar · 02/01/2011 15:10

The only boy i know is Clement Atlee (Prime Minister after Churchill)

My maiden name is Clements, so i really wanted to use it as well. I was thinking Clemency or Clementine as a girls name.

I think Clem / Clemmy is a pretty NN, but my DH has vetoed it for a first name and said i can only use Clementine etc as a middle name. So I will!

I've got a Clement (20 months old) and love the name! :) My husband hadn't realised how rare the name was until after we named him! :o It's not that people had never heard of the name but that they said they'd not heard/thought of it for a while, etc!

The only negative with me is my accent! Blush I'm American, my husband is from London, and we live in Scotland. So as you might imagine, I've got a bit of a muddled accent! And I often have to spell his name before people realise what I said! Blush I'll say "Clement", people will say "I've never heard that name before", I'll spell it out, and then they say "Oh, Clement!" - don't think I make the NT clear enough or something.

But in general, it think everyone always says how lovely the name is. And I agree! :o My Clement is so sweet & charming, smiles at everyone he meets - so I think his name suits him very well, IMHO!

Go for it!

Love it, and love Clementine too.

BabyValentine · 12/12/2010 20:28

Just pointing out that it might not be a commonly known slang term, Loola.

loola2shu · 11/12/2010 21:19

Well it certainly is... well 'Clems' anyway

BabyValentine · 11/12/2010 21:03

I'm from NE England and have never heard of Clem being used as slang for anything...

yellowflowers · 10/12/2010 17:26

I like Clementine too though it is one of those names I would put on a 'what name would you use if you were brave enough' thread.
