Is Pearl trashy?

I was thinking of Pearl for DD but people I've mentioned it to have said it's trashy.

I did notice that Shaun Ryder has a DD called Pearl (other is Lulu) and am this is putting me off a bit - espec as he was mentioning his 'Pearly' often on TV.

Also there's Vanessa George...!!

Is it trashy?

YUK don't like it.

AllieW · 10/12/2010 08:21

Absolutely not! Pearl was top of my list had Arthur been a girl. Love it and will still use it if number 3 (in a few years time!) is a girl).

blinks · 10/12/2010 00:58

pearl was on my list... coral too.

I like it... but it does remind me of 'pearl necklace' just a little bit. Well, a lot. Ok, almost every time I hear it.

vess · 09/12/2010 23:11

Lulu actually means 'pearls', I think.

MissHavishamsDress · 09/12/2010 22:05

Pearl is absolutely gorgeous and I would use it for a future dd if a) I divorced dh (he thinks it's trashy - a man thing methinks) or b) dd1 didn't have an acquaintance called Pearl. Shame, it would go so well with Violet!!

So we're going with Daphne.

JamieLeeCurtis · 09/12/2010 20:40

I really like it

ShoppingDays · 09/12/2010 20:10

mopsyflopsy, Margaret comes from the Greek word 'margaron' meaning 'pearl'.

RunnerHasbeen · 09/12/2010 15:08

Not trashy at all. I think it depends on your accent whether it sounds pretty or not though. I would advise against using the NN pearly/pearlie in certain areas of Scotland as it means (rabbit or sheep) droppings.

mopsyflopsy · 09/12/2010 14:22

How on earth can you derive Pearl from Margaret Confused?

hatebeak · 09/12/2010 13:51

You could always go for Margaret and call her Pearl as a nickname. I think I'm right, that Margaret means Pearl and that it has a reasonably well-established nickname status in that context.
Anyway, I think of Pearl as more fashionable than "trashy". It's pretty, either way.

DasherandSmugly · 09/12/2010 13:50

I really love Pearl. It was on my list.

Hedwig3 · 09/12/2010 13:46

Not trashy at all, its lovely Xmas Smile

There will always be somebody "trashy" choosing your name - they probably copied somebody cool!!!

Xmas Grin
KERALA1 · 09/12/2010 13:40

I like it too. Makes a change from the legions of Rubys.

Panzee · 09/12/2010 12:42

Oh I like Pearl.

mopsyflopsy · 09/12/2010 12:30

"Is Pearl trashy"

What does 'trashy' mean? Has it to do with class, with style or what? I honestly struggle to understand these British 'classifications' of names - too posh, too pretentious, too chav and now too 'trashy' Confused..

Personally I really like Pearl and find it very elegant and more interesting than the overused Ruby.

woolymindy · 09/12/2010 12:12

Pearl Lowe..... eeeeeew, nasty

GrimmaTheNome · 09/12/2010 12:09

Pearls are beautiful - what's ugly about it? Confused

It's hideous.

It does make me think of a rather hard/hard faced middle aged woman, because the only Pearls I know fit that image.

It has a very ugly sound imo.

LittleYellowTeapot · 09/12/2010 11:25

Not trashy at all!

I only know one Pearl and she is beautiful!

GrimmaTheNome · 09/12/2010 11:23

The Pearl I know would have been a lawyer if it had been a career girls went into in her day.

In most professions you're only known by your surname anyway so why the heck would it matter? I mean, there is currently a well known lawyer called Cherie. Hmm

nannynobblystockingnobs · 09/12/2010 11:07

My friend's little DD2 is named after her great grandmother, Pearl is a lovely pretty name and I see no reason why you wouldn't be a lawyer/doctor/mountaineer or anything else with the name!
