bessie26 · 01/12/2010 21:39

blatantly copying the Classic girls names thread, but can anyone suggest any classic/traditional boys names? I have a nice long list of girls names (haven't shown them to DH yet!), but only have 2 boys names

Edward
Matthew

other names I really like, but can't use due to other close friends/family with the same name are:
William
George
Alexander
Christopher
Jonathan

To avoid the popular ones (like Matthew and William) I'd see how often the various names were used last year. Quite a few names mentioned above were given less than 50 times last year (compared to over 8000 Jacks, for example Shock).

Lizzywishes · 06/12/2010 17:21

One class I teach has 5 Matthews in it! Another has 4 or 5 Williams!

Sheerer1 · 06/12/2010 10:11

I like peter and thomas a lot..

The problem is that all of my friends like these names too :D and I want something a little bit more unique.. I think Patrick a beautiful name too.. That name is used in many countries I've been so far too...

Lovely names on here - as someone mentioned already, have a look at the boys names used last year below which are outside the top 250 or so. Some lovely classics there.

anamaria22 · 03/12/2010 08:22

yes, lots of great names suggested thanks - unfortunately most of them seem to already be used by close friends, family or pets!

I now have about 10 girls & 10 boys names on my long list - just need to show them to DH to see what he thinks now! Hmm

Edward is gorgeous.

I think names like david, Andrew and Philip are all due a revival, as are Terence and Timothy.

Laurence

Adam
Andrew
Christopher
David

Peter
Stephen
Quentin
Richard
Samuel
William

are all classic, timeless names that won't date imo.

rachel234 · 02/12/2010 19:24

Nice solid names on this thread - really lovely.

I agree, the nicknamey names like Alfie, Charlie, Archie, Albie already sound a bit dated to my ears.

I think the Royal names are the most classic

Henry
William
John
Edward
Charles
Andrew
Hugh
Louis
George
James
Arthur

and a few biblical..

Joseph
Thomas

I see biblical names such as Isaac, Noah, Elijah and Joshua as names that will date like Mark, Jason, Paul etc..

The nicknamed royal names will date terribly - Alfie, Albie, Charlie, Freddie etc..
