Mathew?

My DH is Mathew. I knew him as Mav for the first couple of years he was in our group of friends because there was already a Matt. Mav is his "gamer" name, short for Maverick in Top Gun because he always wins on Xbox or whatever they're playing.

So - by the time we started dating I called him Mav and continue to do so, as do most of his friends. We don't know why he's Mathew not Matthew, his mum died 10 yrs ago and we don't dare ask his dad.

The thing is, I hate mis-spelled anything - especially names. One of the reasons I stick to Mav is because Mat/Mathew irritates me. Now we have to choose a name for our baby.

So it's either:

Rupert Mathew Hugh Allen
or
Rupert Maverick Hugh Allen

Which would you choose?

Middle names get used so rarely, it really doesn't matter which you choose.

Personally I think Mav is cool so would choose Maverick.

muminthemiddle · 02/12/2010 20:27

Sorry that should read Maverick!

muminthemiddle · 02/12/2010 20:26

If you really cannot spell it Matthew then go for Manerick.

SausageMonster · 02/12/2010 17:19

Maverick =

noun

  1. Southwestern U.S. an unbranded calf, cow, or steer, esp. an unbranded calf that is separated from its mother.
  1. a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates.
  1. ( initial capital letter ) an electro-optically guided U.S. air-to-ground tactical missile for destroying tanks and other hardened targets at ranges up to 15 mi. (24 km).

And you want to call a child that Confused

Komondor · 02/12/2010 14:05

Maverick.

Nobody uses middle names, so choose a fun/ unusual name.

Doesn't mater (see what I did there?) - t'is a middle name. I knew a Mathew too - he was forever correcting people.

BearCrimble · 02/12/2010 12:12

Oh bloody hell go for Maverick.

FairyArmadillo · 02/12/2010 11:51

Maverick. The whole name is cool!

SpotSplatterSplash · 02/12/2010 11:49

Can you just pick a name completely aside from your DH?

One that you both like and agree on.

strumpet82 · 02/12/2010 11:47

IMO, Matthew, spelt without losing the second t.

happycamel · 02/12/2010 11:41

I'd love to just change the spelling but DH won't allow that and DH's family would go nuts too. It's either got to be properly after him or not, I guess they see it as an insult that I think one "t" is wrong or miss-spelled and I have enough problems with them already...but that's another thread!

Thanks for all your responses, I did wonder if you'd all just say I was totally mad for even considering Maverick.

Agree Foxy, it's obviously been a problem, so why not rectify it and use the two t's spelling?

FoxyRevenger · 01/12/2010 22:31

I don't see why you can't use two Ts?

It might not be exactly your husband's name but does that really matter?

It's not as if the pronunciation would be different or anything Confused

tammy234 · 01/12/2010 22:18

Because OPs dh is a Mathew, not Matthew.

As it is a middle name (with Rupert the first name), it doesn't matter that much as the name is rarely used in my experience. I'd go for Maverick if you want to honour your dh, Mav.

SpotSplatterSplash · 01/12/2010 20:06

I don't understand why you can't change the spelling to two t's?

Does your DH object?

happycamel · 01/12/2010 18:57

But both Lilly and Sausage spelled Matthew with two "t"s, which is rather my point.

Maverick or a miss-spelled Mathew!

Matthew

Maverick is utterly ugh!

lilly13 · 30/11/2010 21:45

Matthew! I love the name. It means gift of God in Hebrew.

tammy234 · 30/11/2010 21:10

Maverick definately. Cool and with a nice meaning to your family.

Mathew doesn't look right.

typsical · 30/11/2010 20:18

Maverick sounds better before Hugh... I'm not sure why you can't change the spelling? I know a girl who's middle name is Anne, named after her Mum who is Ann...? It'd still be after your DH, you've just changed it a bit to make it more unique to DS?? I love Rupert btw :)

ItsJustMyOpinion · 30/11/2010 19:39

Go for Maverick, but that is just because my dh is Matthew, Matt to me and Matty to his mates, but I don't like the name Matthew, never have done unfortunately

HelenaRose · 30/11/2010 19:34

Maverick. Middle names rarely get used, and he's got two 'normal' ones to fall back on if he really doesn't like it.

happycamel · 30/11/2010 18:40

Hi ShoppingDays - but that's the problem. I can't pick Matthew. It has to be Mathew with one "t" because that's DH's name or Maverick.

If I could pick Matthew (proper spelling IMO) it would be fine. I seem to spend half my life correcting people's spelling of DH and can't bear the thought of having to do it for DS as well.
