Sophie vs Sophia

Our baby girl is due in less than a week and we are pretty much decided on 'Sophie Beatrice' although I prefer 'Sophia Beatrice.' Have tried to convince hubby (subtly and not so subtly) but to no avail. Does 'Sophie Beatrice' still sound pretty? The middle name is a family name for us both so at least we both agree on this part - what are the chances of my lovely hubby changing his mind once she is born or should I give up on Sophia?!

They're both pretty but I prefer Sophia - would have been my choice for a girl (grandmother's name) but my brother got in first!

LiquoriceLila · 25/11/2010 13:07

Sophia is much nicer and less common

mayanna123 · 25/11/2010 11:52

Sophia Beatrice sounds much better. And you can always shorten Sophia to Sophie but it's harder the other way round.

SacharissaCripslock · 24/11/2010 23:39

Sophia.

Sophie is nice but Sophia is beautiful.

ChateauRouge · 24/11/2010 23:08

Sophia is far superior.

Summertime92 · 24/11/2010 22:52

Sophia is a prettier name but Sophie flows a lot better with Beatrice. i vote Sophie :)

ivykaty44 · 24/11/2010 21:43

I like Sophie

onimolap · 24/11/2010 21:36

I prefer Sophia, and would pronounce it Sof-eye-ah.

If it were spelt Sofia, I wouldn't know whether it was Soff-ee-ah (like the capital of Bulgaria) or So-fee-ah (which is how some people would say "Sophia" anyhow).

LittleMissBliss · 23/11/2010 18:52

I prefer Sophia to Sophie more interesting

FluffMacDuff · 23/11/2010 18:45

Both are pretty and popular.

Less keen on Surf-ia. What about Sophia with the traditional pronunciation - So-fire. As in the actress Sophia Myles and the song by Nerina Pallot but criminally under-used!

pointydog · 23/11/2010 17:10

I prefer Sophie. Sophia just has one syllable too many.

Bue · 23/11/2010 17:02

They're both nice but personally I like Sophie better and think it flows better, too.

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/11/2010 16:57

Yes - I called my dd FiFI as well.

Ha! Now she is 14 she would Curl Her Lip if I tried it now Grin

LadyOfTheFlowers · 23/11/2010 16:48

GetOrf - DD is also Phia and while she is too little to argue I call her Fi-Fi. :o

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/11/2010 15:07

Think Sophia Beatrice sounds better.

I much prefer Sophia. It sounds prettier than Sophie, which imo is a bit meh (I am biased - my daughter is a Sophia).

I also loathe people calling her Sophie as a nickname. She shortens it herself to Phia.

flopsy1974 · 23/11/2010 14:56

Sophie Beatrice sounds much better. Just seems to flow better when you say it.

diddl · 23/11/2010 08:12

I think that Sophia goes better with Beatrice.

NadiaWadia · 23/11/2010 00:14

I vote for Sophie.

A1980 · 23/11/2010 00:10

I don't agree with the above two posts. Sophia Beatrice doesn't flow at all, it's hard to say.

First name ends in -ia, second name begins with Bea-. So that's ee-a, be-a! It rhymes and sounds a little daft IMO. Sorry!

Sophia also reminds me of the old lady from the Golden Girls!

Sophie's cute for a little girl, stick to that.

MelinaM · 22/11/2010 23:18

^I agree, it flows better than Sophie Beatrice! Both lovely names though! x

BigChiefOrganiser · 22/11/2010 22:46

Sophia Beatrice sounds better. I like it spelled Sofia.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/11/2010 22:37

My DD is Sophia. :)

As someone said, Sophie can be used as a NN.

Ragwort · 22/11/2010 22:37

The trouble with Sophia is that you never know how to pronounce it - is it Sofeee-a or Sofia - IYSWIM Grin.

I prefer Sophie Smile.

KatyMac · 22/11/2010 22:36

I like Sofia

lilly13 · 22/11/2010 22:32

It is the same name. Sophie is an Anglo-Saxon version of Sophia/Sofia, a name after a popular Greek and Eastern Orthodox saint.
