Girls name thoughts please!

Thoughts welcome on the following first names for a girl:

Harper

Vesper

Darcey

I seem to see a few posts on other forums about Darcey for a girl becoming very common (as in popular I think). Don't want a common name but live overseas so don't think it would matter.

Vesper is partly from my love of the Bond books and partly a link to my mother's and grandmother's middle name of Vesta. Mentioned to OH that I wanted Vesta as a middle name and he arrived at Vesper as a first name without realising the Bond connection. Also means evening star which I LOVE.

Thoughts? I know they are not for everyone and I do plan on a "normal" middle name in case she hates her first. Should also say that I have a normal first name and I hated being one of hundreds at school!

Whata - that's what I did too, imagine my delight when DD's name was one of the names! Grin

Thanks those who like it. Steal away, beijing. Glad it's nice enough to want to steal Smile

whatagradeA · 12/12/2010 18:34

I saw your MIL thread beijing, then searched for this one to find out what the names were!! Think that's why it's been rediscovered!

melezka · 12/12/2010 15:44

Arsey MIL

beijingaling · 12/12/2010 05:55

I didn't realise this thread was still going. If anyone is interested in Chat I put up a post last night regarding MIL stating how much she hated Vesper and Darcey was too Arsey Darcey. Says she is going to use another name if we go with those and bloody DH is now coming up with new names.

FWIW Vesta was the roman goddess of the hearth (I think... something to do with fire and the home) which is why some matches are Vestas.

Great advice WhatagradeA for saying chosen name with confidence!

Begonyabampot I think the line in the bond book is "most people hate it, I'm just used to it" but my memory could be faulty.

Darcey Elizbaeth is beautiful Dancing. Elizabeth is also a family name so would work for me too (sorry if youre against a stranger "stealing!")

Aww, Darcey Elizabeth is pretty.

whatagradeA · 11/12/2010 23:13

You were wondering a bit further down the thread about whether you should worry about what people think...
We picked an unusual name for DS and I knew lots of people really hate it (thanks MN Wink) We got a few funny looks, raised eyebrows and even one downright rude comment! But we loved the name, and it was the only boys name we loved and agreed on.

When they arrive and are called by thier name, it isn't odd any more it's just them (although it did take me a few months weeks to stop sounding apologetic when I introduced him! Make sure you say it confidently!)

FWIW I like all the names you've chosen Smile

DancingThroughLife · 11/12/2010 19:29

Melezka, I only just realised the link.Blush My MN name comes from the musical Wicked - I am in no way coordinated enough to be a dancer Grin

My DD is a Darcey. Actually, her middle name is Elizabeth, but it wasn't until weeks after she was born that we realised the very obvious P&P blunder link. Oops. Anyway, we still think it's pretty, and it looks lovely written down.

melezka · 11/12/2010 17:54

Yes Dancing - it has positive connotations to any dancey stylee people
And I like Harper

DancingThroughLife · 11/12/2010 17:47

Ok, I'm biased but my favourite is Darcey. Smile To me, it looks and sounds pretty.

I actually like Harper too. It sounds American but so what?

I'm not keen on Vesper though. But it's not up to me.

I like Nelle freerange.

freerangeeggs · 11/12/2010 17:26

Harper Lee is a woman, and her real first name is Nelle.

How about Hesper? I love it but I've not had great responses, tbh.

bensonbutnohedges · 11/12/2010 16:33

Harper's Bizarre

begonyabampot · 11/12/2010 15:30

Vesta makes me think of matches - Swan Vesta.

melezka · 11/12/2010 15:21

Also I think you said in another post that your DH is Australian and from memory Vesta is a kind of Fray Bentos brand there. Vesta - crap curry and rice and I'm with the others who say Vesper = vespiform waspy thing.

begonyabampot · 11/12/2010 15:15

Darcey is ok and the safe bet but sounds a bit harsh to me, like someone with a catsbum face.

Vesper would just make me think of Bond and the inference was that she probably hated her name.

I like Harper actually and love the connection with Harper Lee and To Kill A Mockingbird.

vess · 02/12/2010 12:19

Vesta much nicer than Vesper.
Harper is not great for a girl.
don't like Darcey much but its probably ok

ChippingIn · 02/12/2010 10:56

LOL @ your 'friend' - though I am a bit worried about you... if your friends are like that - what are your enemies like Grin

You'll have to come back and let us know what you have chosen!

Rhubarbgarden · 02/12/2010 08:17

I find myself rather liking Vesper though I feel I shouldn't. Darcy is nice, Harper - no.

beijingaling · 02/12/2010 07:20

Grin ChippingIn would NEVER ask my RL friends opinions as I would probably resent being told the names are terrible etc. Strangers don't bother me though!

One of my dear friends in RL has a habit, when a new babies name is mentioned to her and she doesn't like it, of just going "NO no. That's just chavy/terrible/revolting/not acceptable" as if it wasn't too late and the parent's will rush out and name change to please her. It drives me MAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

OP posts:
ChippingIn · 02/12/2010 02:11

I think you are right about having a number instead Grin

I don't think it's wise to ask peoples opinions before you choose a name - but as you did.....

Harper - Harper Collins publisher

Vesper - Vespa bike

Darcey/Darcy - Bussell/Mr Darcy

Sorry :(

beijingaling · 02/12/2010 02:05

Thanks for all of the responses! I really appreciate them all.

Harper Lee was a woman btw.

Everything Greenwing says.

But Vesper has a lovely quiet sound.

(Harper Lee is a woman)
